title Computational modeling for climate change: Simulating and visualizing a resilient landscape architecture design approach

summary Coastlines are changing, wildfires are raging, cities are getting hotter, and spatial designers are charged with the task of designing to mitigate these unknowns. This research examines computational digital workflows to understand and alleviate the impacts of climate change on urban landscapes. The methodology includes two separate simulation and visualization workflows. The first workflow uses an animated particle fluid simulator in combination with geographic information systems data, Photoshop software, and three-dimensional modeling and animation software to simulate erosion and sedimentation patterns, coastal inundation, and sea level rise. The second workflow integrates building information modeling data, computational fluid dynamics simulators, and parameters from EnergyPlus and Landsat to produce typologies and strategies for mitigating urban heat island effects. The effectiveness of these workflows is demonstrated by inserting design prototypes into modeled environments to visualize their success or failure. The result of these efforts is a suite of workflows which have the potential to vastly improve the efficacy with which architects and landscape architects use existing data to address the urgency of climate change.

summary The Garifuna are a group of people that live on the northern coast of Honduras and the coast of Belize. They have a very distinct and vibrant culture. Minority cultures are currently absorbed by mainstreamed cultures and the Garifuna ethnicity is directly influenced by this phenomenon. In this research it is of special concern to encapsulate Garifuna vernacular architecture by means of shape grammars. The research provides a clear documentation of the grammars implemented in Grasshopper, as well as discusses about the issues of embedding shape grammars in the Rhino/Grasshopper environment.

Intuitive interaction or computing design is the second theme addressed in CAADRIA 2009. l Digital Design is Intelligent. summary Space designers usually look for information on site before proceeding design. They image any possibilities of design, while they are on site. Restricted to traditional design media, if they want to develop their ideas further, they have to go back to desks. This kind of design process can capture only part of information of the site. Why not do some developments directly when designers are on the site? That is the starting point of this paper. The whole situation of site is very complicated, so it is very difficult discussing all the possibilities. In order to understand how to design on site, reducing the variations is needed. Tsai and Chang (2005) proposed a prototype about design on site, which focuses on land forming. So I chose interior as the site to reduce the variation and have more controllable factors. Still there are many factors effecting design on site, scale is very unique and very important factor of them. Beginners are difficult to really feel how long it is on the plan drawing, and even most advanced VR equipment still can’t fully present the rich information on the site. To experience the site though body, the main idea is how to propose a portable device that can support space designer to do design on site directly, with intuitional body movement and precise scale, and get feedback immediately.

summary Differences in the preferred modes of representation of architects and their clients create challenges to their collaboration in the design process. Traditional two-dimensional drawings such as plans, sections and elevations form the backbone of architectural representation, anchoring text labels to record relevant non-graphical information. Nominally geometric “slices” through the proposed building volume, these drawings employ abstractions and conventions unique to professional practice. In contrast, non-architects think about building configuration largely through experiential or photographic perspective. This challenge increases over the life of the project. Simple drawings, such as those used in schematic design, are easily understood by all parties. However, as the building design develops the architects encode more and more design detail through the drawing conventions of construction documents, inadvertently making this detail less and less accessible to non-architects. We present DVIN, a prototype system that uses coordinated plan and perspective views for navigation of building information models, linking the information to an individual’s spatial navigation skills rather than their document navigation skills. This web-based application was developed using Java and VRML. The prototype makes it easier for naive users to locate and query building information, whether they are a client, a facility manager, or possibly an emergency responder.

summary Tou kung represent Chinese architecture. Due to the difficulty of learning from ancient books, some develop 3D assembly models. Still, there are limits while using 2D images for assembly instructions. The purpose of this study is to explore whether the application of AR technology can guide the process of tou kung assembly and address the recognition gap between paper illustrations and the physical assembly process. The method is to observes the user's tou kung assembly behavior and performance. summary The research on tectonics in the architectural field began from the middle of nineteenth century and in recent twenty years digital technology gradually developed and permeated through the field of architecture. Liu and Lim (2006, 2009) integrated classic and digital tectonic factors a present framework of new tectonics. However, the previous studies related to the tectonics in this digital age were only on architectural cases that use a great deal of digital media. The research wants to know what and how the tectonic factors affect the different spatial forms of modern architecture and focused on a case study of the diversified spatial forms, orthogonal, folding and curving. The results show the classic tectonic thinking is imperative until now. It is critical to prove the significance of adding the new digital tectonic factors in digital age.

summary This research attempts to integrate a new technology–Multi- Display Environment (MDE)–into the design and creation of new architectural spaces–multi-display spaces. The research objective is to formulate a set of design guidelines that advise designers on the effective use of the MDE technology, so that the technology may become a new design element and enables designers to show amplification effects of spaces. Two empirical studies are conducted. Based on the results of empirical studies, a set of multi-display space design guidelines is formulated with three key aspects: scene selection, display allocation and display arrangement. The design guidelines require further validations through practical applications. Nevertheless, the research introduces a new design element for designers to think about the future of architectural spaces with more opportunities and possibilities.

summary In Taiwan, apartments are sold before ever been built. Apartment buyers can customize their units until the construction takes place. This customization process has become a very unique form of user participation in the development of apartment buildings in Taiwan. However, in all customizations, large amount of information has to be documented and exchanged between related agencies for each apartment unit. For an apartment building that contains over 40 units, managing the information can be a daunting task. We are developing a web environment to support the customization process and enable efficient management and timely exchanges of information. The environment provides three levels of design interaction to encourage user participation in a controlled customization process. This paper describes the framework of this web environment, illustrates its functionality through a running prototype, and discusses technical issues encountered during its implementation.

summary Generative design systems take an active part in the generation of computational design models. They make it easier for designers to explore conceptual alternatives, but the amount of information generated during a design session can become very large. Intelligent navigation aids are needed to enable designers to access the information with ease and low cognitive loads. We present an approach to support navigation in generative design systems. Our approach takes account of studies related to navigation in physical environments as well as information navigation in electronic media. Results of studies from the physical environment and electronic media reveal that 1) people exhibit similar cognitive behaviours (spatial cognition and the use of spatial knowledge) while navigating in physical and information spaces; and 2) the information space lacks legibility and imageability. The proposed information navigation model take these findings into account.

summary This paper presents a pilot study about impacts that a generative system may have on the architectural design process. The study contains two empirical experiments. The generation experiment studies how experienced and novice designers will utilize such a design system. The formulation/generation experiment observes the problem formulation and solution generation behaviors of less experienced designers. Results of these experiments highlight two issues that require further investigations: 1) domain expertise and modes of interaction that concerns the implementation of future generative systems; and 2) learning through interaction that addresses the use of generative systems in education.

summary The research effort presented here is based on the view of emergent behaviors. The aim is to develop smart building products each of which is independent, self-sufficient and with very limited intelligence. Using “Basic Building Block” as a platform, three building products, interactive louvers, see-through wall panel, and sensible floor tile are developed to illustrate the emergent smart behavior. These smart building products contain intelligent technologies that can be implemented into existing buildings incrementally without having to perform major renovations.

summary This research explores the relationship between unexpected outcomes generated through parametric design tools and the design creative process. We conducted an empirical study to observe how designers behave while encountering unexpected outcomes using parametric design tools as well as other kinds of design tools. From our study, there are some indications that the space of possible design solutions of the participants was expanded with the existence of unexpected outcomes. The preliminary result is encouraging. Further studies may need to address experience designers and novice designers separately.

title Design space navigation in generative design systems

summary Generative design systems make it easier for designers to generate and explore design alternatives, but the amount of information generated during a design session can become very large. Intelligent navigation aids are needed if designers wish to access the information they generate with ease. We present a comprehensive approach to support information navigation in requirement-driven generative design systems, which gain their power form explicit representations of design requirements, which in turn add to the information generated by the system. Our approach takes into account studies dealing with human spatial cognition, wayfinding in physical environments, and information navigation in electronic media. We structure the information to be accessed in terms of a five-dimensional design space model that applies across generative design systems of the type considered here. The model structure supports basic generic navigation operations along its five dimensions. We validated the model in the context of the SEED-Layout system and used it to extend the built-in navigation tools of the system through novel ones, which we subjected to a limited usability study. The study suggests that these tools have promise and warrant further investigation.

summary Virtual Reality (VR) has been proven an effective media for design communications. VR-enabled design environments allow laypersons to join in various stages of design process and achieve a wide range of participatory designs. However, most of these environments are developed for research purposes and not easily accessible to architects. This research aims to bridge the gap of VR hardware and design software to make VR easily accessible to architects. We develop a set of 4 use cases for implementing VR-enabled design environment: (1) Export Design Elements to VR; (2) Authorizing VR co-design environment; (3) Design Manipulation in VR; and (4) Output VR Objects to CAAD. A prototype has been implemented using HTC Vive and Unity to test these use cases. The data exchange between VR environment and CAAD environment is achieved through the JSON format. The prototype is tested by students in a graduate-level design studio with promising results.
