summary The didactic activity related to the teaching of Perspective has been revised considering the possibility offered by the computing tools. This review must evaluate the potentialities of concepts and procedures related to the traditional techniques as sources for architectural graphics expression, before suggesting its suppression. It is possible to improve the accuracy and quickness controlling the visualization parameters of three-dimensional models. On the other hand, it is necessary to explore the development of the ability to construct quick hand made perspectives (sketches). This work searches for the development of a structure to the teaching process, which emphasizes the potentiality of both ways, traditional and computerized. It explores the flexibility of teaching, from face to face to distance learning, and introduces an enlarged structure of knowledge able to support the traditional and also a computerized process of representation.

summary Additive Manufacturing (AM) offers the potential development of novel architectural applications of ceramic building components that can be engineered at the level of material to the extent of designing its performance and properties by density variations. This research presents a computational method and fabrication technique emulating complex material behavior via AM of intricate geometries and presents components with photocatalytic and climatic properties. It proposes an innovative application of AM of ceramic components in architecture to explore potential bioclimatic and antipollution performative use. Lattices are defined and manufactured with density variation gradients by tracing rectilinear clay deposition toolpaths that induce porosity intended for fluid filtering and to maximize sun exposure. The design method for photocatalytic, particle filtration and evaporative cooling local characterization introduced by complex patterning elements in architectural envelope slat components processed with radiation analysis influenced design are validated by simulation and experimental testing on specimens manufactured by paste extrusion.

summary The method proposed in this paper addresses the management of values and the cost estimate, based on target costing approach, and integrated with Building Information Model (BIM). This design method must incorporate mechanisms of automated assessment associated with desired value at cost during the design process. The paper will try to show, in brief, that there is a real possibility of inclusion of methodological tools of design, allowing assessment of values in real time during the design actions.

summary The microscopic universe represents a realm of intriguing possibilities, albeit one that remains largely unexplored. Promoting science through innovative approaches is vital, and the emergence of STEAM stands as a viable tool for that. Architecture, as a realm that directly impacts society, presents a unique potential to convey this new language, manifesting through building facades, walls, or urban furnishings. This study aims to unearth this potential by scrutinizing microscopic images and transposing this universe onto surfaces. The technique involves the 3D mapping of patterns extracted from micrographs and their application onto minimal surfaces. Through digital fabrication, the microcosmic and architectural realms converge within a transdisciplinary framework. This research underscores the feasibility to connect various knowledge domains, rendering them accessible to a broad audience, enabling microscopic imagery to explore, in novel contexts such as architectural ones, a playful and inclusive means of presentation.

summary The program is organized into four parts. Each is very much connected, both logically and methodologically, so that the unit as a whole consists of a content and method of access that are not divided up. This method is not in a chronological order that simply goes in one direction, rather it allows the user to "refer back", in real time and in different directions. For the simple purpose of explanation, the sections of the program are listed as follows: (-) "Basic information" concerns the basics of bioclimatic and timber architecture. Without this knowledge, the other two sections would be difficult to understand; (-) "Actual buildings throughout the world"; give examples of architectural quality; they concretize the basics of bioclimatic and timber architecture; (-) "Students' Masters Theses", that follow on from the basic information and the learning experience "in the field", and guided by the lecturer, have a critical approach to actual buildings throughout the world. (-) A multimedia data-sheet organized to ensure a clear and straightforward presentation of information about the construction products. It relies on a tab-based navigation interface that gives users access to eight different stacked windows.

title A comparison of land valuation methods supported by GIS

summary The purpose of this work was to study three different strategies for the appraisal of urban land. The first, a theoretical strategy created by the authors of this study to reproduce the common conditions of Brazilian cities, uses increments and reductions in the value of a square meter of land according to each lot’s individual features. The second method, based on Multiple Regression techniques, is widely used for valuation purposes. Finally, the effectiveness of Artificial Neural Networks to deal with thiskind of problem is studied. A sample of 157 lots was collected from several neighbourhoods of a small Brazilian city for the case study. The lot features recorded were area, width, shape, distance to the downtown district of the city through the street network, existence of fences and paved sidewalks, and market price. Prediction errors have been estimated for each of the three methods in order to compare their results. Predicted and error values, added to Geographical Information Systems, may be used to build thematic maps and to check how each strategy applies to different areas of the city. The analyses of error values conducted in this study showed that Artificial Neural Networks presented the best performance as a land appraisal method for the case studied.

summary Machine Learning (ML) has valuable applications that are yet to be proliferated in the AEC industry. Yet, ML offers arguably significant new ways to produce and assist design. However, ML tools are too often out of the reach of designers, severely limiting opportunities to improve the methods by which designers design. To address this and to optimise the practices of designers, the research aims to create a ML tool that can be integrated into architectural design workflows. Thus, this research investigates how ML can be used to universally move BIM data across various design platforms through the development of a convolutional neural network (CNN) for the recognition and labelling of rooms within floor plan images of multi-residential apartments. The effects of this computation and thinking shift will have meaningful impacts on future practices enveloping all major aspects of our built environment from designing, to construction to management.

summary Dwelling environment is not intelligent if it does not include the concept of home. The emergence of ICT allowed new functions as well as new ways of performing the traditional ones. The need to be online does not remove the need of privacy and to print the site. New ways of living require rethinking dwelling typology to flexibility. Intelligent environments will appear to elevate the sense of home, where security, autonomy, independence, comfort and interaction will be crucial to promote a more qualified life. Technological solutions can be driven in different directions: energy efficiency; lightening and temperature control, video surveillance, access control, etc., assistive environments; entertainment solutions like home theater and professional ones; all have in common to conceive the environment that matches user’s expectancies, where human interaction and social participation emerge as crucial requirements.

This path seems to end up in cities filled up with iconic buildings with no respect neither for the consolidated built environment, nor for the human being. Known as an innovation tools, with huge power and able to make all the visionary and utopian projects become real seem to further Architecture away from its humanist basis. The architect, selfish and egocentric, dives deep into his own craziness, in an era where the new technologies allow everything. If boundaries are not established, a new architectural paradigm is anticipated, where all the individualisms live but that the individual cannot inhabit, and where the innovation seems to enter in conflict with built heritage.

summary This paper discusses tools and strategies to support the capturing and use of knowledge embodied in design practice. The tools described are part of a system conceived as a suite of modular tools, KMan, to be developed and adopted incrementally and independently, in the framework of a wider organizational knowledge management strategy. The concept of knowledge pebbles is introduced to describe collections of heterogeneous data formats to form a unit of potential knowledge In the final section of the paper an overview of all the tools part of the system is presented and some of the tools described and illustrated in more detail. In particular the Brief Management Tool, the Generic Search Tool and the Pebble Creation Tool are discussed.

summary Combining Biomimicry and Parametric Design, this research aims to detail the design process of an ephemeral pavilion which uses the method Biomimicry Design Lens, proposed by Biomimicry 3.8. The experiments developed in this paper followed the method’s diagram insights and it was guided by the ‘Biology for Design’ diagram in a non-sequential order in the design process. The pavilion is located in the Serpentine Gallery, and it was bio-inspired by the ribs of the inferior face of the Victoria amazonica leaf, a natural morphological structure that was translated into a quadrangular grid characteristic of the waffle structure. Finally, the parametric implementation allowed the development of several morphological experiments.

summary Over the last decade, advances in computer graphics plus the growing popularity of the Internet have incorporated the words reality and virtuality into our vocabulary, at the same time, making the distance between the words shorter. In this article, we discuss the two concepts - reality and virtuality - and analyze how this question has affected human communication, specially in the Web environment. This analysis will be used as a basis for research on the impact of “non-presence” in working relationships in a virtual environment, more specifically in the architecture and engineering areas where we find the Web being used as a communication tool for the development of collaborative design between groups involved with the design process of the built environment.

summary This article aims to identify and analyze inductive aspects (those which go from particular instances to the general configuration) present in ideation phases of digital design projects (such as apps, websites and tools for companies’ internal communications), with special emphasis on how induction occurs in creative processes. Using a qualitative methodological approach, the analysis is based on in-depth, semi-structured interviews with digital designers, on a literature review on the subjects of creativity and classic design method, as well as on a design documentary. Research findings suggest the importance of combining the use of verbal and visual communication resources in group dynamics; the need for designers to be highly proficient in the tools and techniques used while generating new alternatives, regardless of their physical/analogical or virtual/digital nature; and to allocate, whenever possible, ample time to explore ideas in order to push the limits of each project being developed.

summary This research presents a process of the combination of Computational Design with bioclimatic parameters from different climatic zones in Brazil, to assist in the analysis of standardized architectural solutions for Housing projects. For the analysis, a model was defined and inserted in three Brazilian (Brasília, Curitiba e Manaus) cities, which belonged to different bioclimatic zones, Z1, Z4 and Z8. The insertion of climatic parameters, as well as the production of the analysis prototype, were performed using Rhinoceros and its extensions Ladybug and Grasshopper.

This paper discusses the variables involved, pointing the major constraints to the intensive use of ICT in the architectural process. summary As the architecture industry engages computational methods to automate and optimise design processes, decision-making becomes embedded and hidden within complex code. Even where employees understand the procedure and logic of architectural scripts they may struggle to understand those developed by others and used on different projects. Accordingly, this paper outlines the research and development of a workflow to trace and document the decision-making history (DMH) of architectural scripts. This develops the relational database Huginn to test the feasibility of tracing decision-making history in scripting through a Python Web framework that sends data in a JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) format from Grasshopper. The research outcomes successfully demonstrate a system that can link a series of objects to their 'decision' origins. This contributes to informing the development of theoretically-grounded coding protocols and simultaneously demystifying the complexity of architectural scripting and communicating the significance of data-augmented decision making within contemporary architectural design processes.
