summary The Contextualized Digital Heritage Workshop - Lodz continues the path started by two successful workshops held during the eCAADe (Oulu, Finland) and CAADRIA (Suzhou, China) conferences. This workshop aims at creating a space to allow scholars to discuss, share and apply their skills and knowledge in a digital heritage experiment contextualized in Lodz, Poland. The city has a rich industrial heritage. Hence, this event will allow participants to explore an architectural heritage that was not investigated during the previous two workshops which were focused on different kind of heritage. Digital technologies together with multidisciplinary approaches allow to study and analyse tangible and intangible features of architectural heritage in alternative and innovative ways. The workshop will build upon the experiences and reflections elaborated during and after the previous two events.

summary This paper presents a first critical framing of 3D digital reconstructions of lost buildings, hence focusing on reconstructions using 3D models. This critical framing is constituted by reflections on definitions, concepts, methodologies and digital technologies. Much experimentation in the digital reconstruction of lost buildings has produced valuable results during the last twenty years, but the variety of methods, software types, and purposes should be reorganized into clear operational protocols to allow sharing of information and collaboration across disciplines. We have therefore investigated the diverse approaches towards digital reconstructions of lost buildings and found that digital reconstructions are not typically aimed at simple visualizations: they are often further developed in virtual environments, information systems and tools for simulations and analysis. In this sense they are not products but instruments for further research and/or heritage conservation. Counter the large number of theoretical positions, methods and tools specific to different disciplines, such as architecture and archaeology, we can find the almost total absence of a comprehensive critical assessment. This paper, which is part of a larger project, intends to open and articulate a debate on how to define, analyze and critically systematize the methodologies for the digital reconstruction of lost buildings.

summary Constructions pertaining to built heritage represent precious material and cultural resources to be studied and preserved for present and future generations. In recent years, this built heritage is increasingly understood, documented, managed, analysed and disseminated through the application of several digital technologies; this trend has created one of the main research areas in architecture, called Digital Heritage. Digital technologies open up alternative and new possibilities in the study of tangible and intangible features of built heritage. This workshop aims to create a space to allow scholars to discuss, share and apply their knowledge in a digital heritage exercise contextualized in Oulu.

summary In the following paper, a description, a comparison, a series of reflections, and future directions of two successful Contextualized Digital Heritage Workshops (CDHW) will be presented. The workshops have been organized during the eCAADe and CAADRIA conferences. The importance of architectural heritage as an expression of a local history and identity in a world that is more and more globalised is evident. Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, together with the use of digital technologies open new opportunities in the comprehension, documentation, analysis, reuse and dissemination of architectural heritage. The main concept behind a CDHW is to connect the event (and its wide variety of participants) to a specific local context in a multidisciplinary way. The paper defines and proposes a methodology to critically evaluate the two workshops and their individual aspects in order to identify and investigate ideas that can be explored during future CDHWs.

summary The following paper proposes a way of reading and systematizing 3d representations of cities in video games. These representations are the result of a complex design problem not solely limited to 3d graphical representations. In fact, every 3d city is a designed artefact, an outcome of a design process that shares many common points with the architectural design process. Four main characteristics of 3d cities in videogames have been identified and described, namely: interaction/gameplay, narrative, architectural and urban representations, and graphical representations. The study of 3d cities in video games can also let us reflect on and improve our real cities. This piece of writing is part of a larger project that intends to investigate aspects of video games that can bring innovative approaches and theories into architecture and related fields. A further aim of the work is to raise interest and awareness on the topic and generate further discussions.

summary This paper describes the process of creation of a set of visualizations (elevations, perspective views and a short animation) of C.R. Mackintosh’s original but unrealized first design proposal for Scotland Street School (dated January 1904). Moreover, the piece of writing reflects upon some key aspects of the project such as how architectural historians were involved and how ambiguities due to the discrepancies between the drawings and missing details were resolved by studying multiple drawings and transferring clues from other Mackintosh’s built works. The contributions of this research are important for several reasons: it proposes a methodology that can be applied to similar research projects; it explains the educational value of the development work, which can be defined as digitally handcrafted, behind the visualisations; it contributes to studies of buildings designed by C.R. Mackintosh by using digital technologies that open up new insights to aspects still overlooked of his architectural production.

summary The following paper describes and critically reflects on the remarkable production of a creative community of level designers who designed and published 3D game levels (3D real-time virtual navigable environments) during the end of the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s. During those years, many level designers from several countries created an impressive number and variety of custom levels (user-created content), characterised by imaginary architectures and places informed by narrative elements. This international community was supported by various websites that are no longer available. However, an open-source website, Unreal Archive, constitutes “an initiative to preserve and maintain availability of the rich and vast history of user-created content for the Unreal and Unreal Tournament series of games” (Unreal Archive, 2022). The number of levels available on Unreal Archive exceeds 34,000. For the first time in the architectural research community, this paper aims to shed light on the creative production of that period, and to identify and critically reflect on aspects that could have cultural, creative and educational value for architecture and architectural education. The author directly experienced the achievements of that historical period, and created and published a number of virtual environments using early versions of the Unreal Editor/Engine and 3D modelling software. This research is part of a larger project that investigates transdisciplinary expressions of spaces and architectures, as well as concepts, methodologies and tools in the video games field that can inspire or be transferred to the architecture field.
