summary The application of new media is common practice in architectural offices and complements traditional forms of presentation such as drawings and physical ‘haptic’ models. Other interactive forms of presentation are also already available, for example in the realm of computer gaming, however the transfer and application of game engines to an architectural environment has not yet been explored in any depth. This paper looks at how “new media” can be used as a means of communicating architectonic information without simply emulating an already available traditional means of representation. We discuss the process of learning how “new media” (the computer as a multi media) can be used as a tool for the analysis and reconstruction of architecture. Using Mies van der Rohe’s unrealised project for a brick country house as a basis, a project was devised which communicates valuable design and analysis skills and also allowed us to explore the use of “new media” and to draw conclusions for teaching and research as well as to critically assess the opportunities, limitations and risks involved.

summary Activities in the building industry in Germany concentrate increasingly on a combination of renovation and new-build. A look at current computer aided applications reveals a serious lack of IT support for the whole architectural design process in and within existing buildings (e.g. building surveying, designing on site and the preparation of information for further use in later planning stages). An ongoing interdisciplinary research project undertaken jointly by the faculty of media and the faculty of architecture is investigating methods and techniques for the computer-aided support of the design process in and within existing buildings. The goal is to develop a hardware and software concept for a “design-toolbox” based on SAR (spatial augmented reality) and to implement aspects of this as prototypes. This paper describes the goals of the “Spatial Augmented Reality for Architecture” project and discusses possible fields of application for SAR for supporting the design process in existing buildings from a user’s perspective. This paper presents the initial results of the project, the development of a cave-like hardware and software concept called “low-cost projection in room corners” and the description of the core concept based on a client-server architecture. The project is funded by the “German Research Foundation (DFG)”.

title The Computer Integrated Road Construction project

summary This paper is about the "Computer Integrated Road Construction" (CIRC) project, which is a Brite-EuRam III funded project, lasting 1997–1999, aiming at introducing a new generation of control and monitoring tools for road pavements construction. These new tools are designed to bring on the sites significant improvements by creating a digital link between design office and job site. The first part of the paper describes the background of the project, which gathers seven European partners from five different countries, and gives the objectives of the project, in general and for each of the two targeted products: one for the compactors (CIRCOM) and one for the asphalt pavers (CIRPAV). Then, the two prototypes are described, each of them being broken down into three main sub-systems: the ground sub-system (GSS), the on-board sub-system (OB) and the positioning sub-system (POS). The expected benefits for the different users are also presented and quantified. The central part of the paper is devoted to the main technical innovations that have been developed in the frame of the project: universal vector database for road equipment guidance, multi-machine functionalities of CIRCOM and the two positioning systems which are actually the technological keys of the systems. Finally, the state of progress of the developments of the two CIRC products and the first commercial success achieved in parallel are presented.

summary This work proposes and tests, through the application to a Portuguese case study (Largo da Graça in Lisbon historic center), an original method of analysis specifically oriented to the study of public squares. Collecting contributions from the disciplines of urban morphology, social studies, environmental and site analysis, the presented methodology aims to synchronously and multi-dimensionally characterize and classify urban spaces at a multi-scale scale level, by coordinating multiple tools and advanced analysis techniques, in a process whose ultimate goal is to understand and improve the quality of public open spaces and to encourage its appropriation and enjoyment by the local community and the visitors.

summary This paper is an account of the façade rationalisation strategy developed at Gehry Technologies for mitigating the tradeoffs between project constructability and the aesthetic implications of arranging flat panels over a complex surface. The strategy outlined was developed as the result of the digital building delivery of the Museo Soumaya façade in Mexico City designed by Fernando Romero LAR. This report documents the development process of a method for obtaining relevant construction information flows enabling the assembly of the façade system by a third-party sub-contractor in support of the façade system coordination. This report concludes on a method using bespoke software for extending the parametric modelling system Digital Project™ in the design support role of obtaining an aesthetically pleasing arrangement of flat hexagonal panels over a freeform surface.

summary People are aware of objects in physical spaces to which they may act responsively. We are interested in human behavioral changes in the presence of reactive displays in shared environments. In a limited 2-week field study, using plants (both natural and artificial) as reactive displays, we observed human trash disposal/recycling behavior. We found that there is a significant increase in recycling (p=0.08) when there are reactive display with natural plants. We also noticed increase in recycling with displays with artificial plants. These findings suggest that people can and do alter their behavior in shared environments, and that such behavioral changes can be effected by the use of reactive/responsive information displays.

title Augmented Reality-Based Education and Fire Protection for Traditional Korean Buildings

summary This study examines an application of Augmented Reality technology (AR) for Korean Cultural Traditional Buildings, specifically, the Namdaemun Gate, "National Treasure No 1" of the Republic of Korea. Unfortunately, in February 2008, the Namdaemun Gate burned down, despite the efforts of many firemen, as the main difficulty was getting the fire under control without any structural knowledge of the wooden building. Hence, with the great advances in digital technology, an application of virtual technical information to traditional buildings is needed, and the new technology of AR offers many such advantages for digital architectural design and construction fields. While AR is already being considered as new design approach for architecture, outdoor AR is another practical application that can take advantage of new wearable computer equipment (Head-mounted display also know as HMD, position and orientation sensors, and mobile computing) to superimpose virtual graphics of traditional buildings (in this case, Namdaemun Gate) in a real outdoor scene. Plus, outdoor AR also allows the user to move freely around and inside a 3D virtual construction, thereby offering important training opportunities, for example, specific structural information in the case of firemen and mission planning in the case of a real-life emergency. In this example, the proposed outdoor AR system is expected to provide important educational information on traditional wooden building for architects, archaeologists, and engineers, while also assisting firemen to protect such special buildings.

summary Collective Design seeks to explore how new forms of Collective Intelligence, arising from the web, allows mass participation in design. Regarding design we have a wellestablished grounding for understanding how design works through the use of representations. Likewise, collective intelligence via certain crowdsourcing examples has demonstrated that a diverse crowd can trump ability groups, when the conditions are right. In the literature, crowdsourcing is the leading lens bridging design with collective intelligence. However in crowdsourcing design there is less focus on the role of shared representations, subsequently any collective diversity is mitigated by the models that govern the extraction of this intelligence. We propose that more effective design in collective intelligence lies in the crowd’s ability to generate meaningful contributions via the content of shared representations. In order to investigate this, the current paper examines data collected from a pilot study in which a representationally rich online collaborative presentation tool is used to provide a shared design space. The analysis presented applies our previously established semiotic framework to identify potential patterns in the meaningful communication of image based design information.

title Kinetic Hybrid Structure Development and Simulation

summary Supported through technological advances, the concept of kinetic architecture is internationally increasingly acknowledged in the past years in the development of adaptable buildings as to differing functional requirements, or external loading conditions. Most decisive factor is the structure in terms of materials and geometrical configurations, and the control system integrated within. Based on general principles of tensegrity structures, a hybrid system has been developed that consists of continuous hinge connected compression members, strengthened by an internal system of struts and continuous cable diagonals with closed loop. The kinetic mechanism is achieved through alteration of the cables length and the respective relative inclination of any adjacent compression members. In this way the transformability of the system arises primarily from the inherent integrative composition and dual capabilities of its members. Following the construction design of the prototype structure, the interactive development, as regards geometric properties and structural configurations, is presented analytically, as based on a parametric-associative design approach applied. Along this line, the specific syntax of structural development and simulation through parametric design is suggested to support in real terms the control design of the innovative structure in an integrated interactive context.

summary Generative design system develops the purpose that is can generate a large number of design plans. Generative design system can let designer unceasingly explore the new design plans. At present generative design system, they all only have one kind of generative mechanism. Therefore, one can’t provide enough feasibility for designer to explore new plans. So, in this paper, we propose a Co-Generative Form System (COgenForm). COgenForm is a 3D form exploration system that invokes two set of generative mechanisms. This system used co-evolutional characteristics to build the steps and framework of co-generative design process. This system includes two groups of generative mechanisms and these will evolve with each other. Using this system, the form exploration and generation process can be more dynamic and more alternatives.

summary Parameterization has shown potential in creating architectural projects and verification steps. The objective is to develop a parametric and generative tool, containing the urban parameters of the Master Plan of a municipality, to assist in the phase of field study. The model is developed with the aid of Revit software and Dynamo plug-in. The results converge to a tool where users enter the lot’s dimensions and zoning, and it applies the other parameters. It is possible to analyze the constructive potential quickly, avoiding errors. The parameterization process is emphasized, encouraging the user to apply new methodologies in early project stages.

summary This paper expects to concur for the study of the relationship between technology, knowledge and representation. It is based on previous studies on architecture, art and technology on modernity and its development, as well as studies about scale in architectural design. In despite of the fact that scale can be technically considered indifferent for computer aided design, I wish to discuss how digital tools intercede in the process of clipping that selecting a specific scale eventually implies, sustaining that for architectural design, the concept of scale has to do both with representation and knowledge of reality.

The complexity of this installation lies in the choreographed motion of two proto-architectural figures: two carbon-fibre shells are designed with interlocking apertures, structural ribs that accentuate the perceived motion from the inside, and degrees of translucency that create secondary apertures.

summary The digital transformation of the construction industry and the lack of integration of digital technologies in design and construction processes are the motivation for this research. BIM solutions enable new levels of design processes and provide platforms for computational design and novel approaches in the AEC industry. In computational design parametric, generative or algorithmic procedures are utilized to support, optimize, or replace manual processes. The combination of BIM and generative, parametric or algorithmic design forms a hybrid that aims to combine the advantages of both concepts and allows for generative design processes with the creation of BIM objects containing metadata. Along with the digital transformation and novel approaches in the AEC industry, modular construction aims to shift from mass production to mass customization and maximize opportunities for cost-effective, economical, and sustainable buildings. This paper addresses the approach of generating building information models using algorithm-aided design combined with BIM at an early design stage for modular multi-story residential buildings that are affordable and sustainable. In this study, we present the framework of an algorithm-aided BIM approach, from the concept of the generative algorithm to the evaluation approach and the proof of concept as the test of the framework
