title ADELINE, an Integrated Approach to Lighting Simulation
source Proceedings of Right Light 4, 4th European Conference on Energy-Efficient Lighting, pp.99-103
summary The use of daylighting and artificial lighting simulation programs to calculate complex systems and models in the design practice often is impeded by the fact that the operation of these programs, especially the model input, is extremely complicated and time-consuming. Programs that are easier to use generally do not show the calculation capabilities required in practice. A second obstacle arises as the lighting calculations often do not allow any statements regarding the interactions with the energetic and thermal building performance. Both problems are mainly due to a lacking integration of the design tools of other building design practitioners as well as due to insufficient user interfaces. The program package ADELINE (Advanced Daylight and Electric Lighting Integrated New Environment) being available since May 1996 as completely revised version 2.0 presents a promising approach to solve these problems. This contribution describes the approaches and methods used within the international project IEA Task 21 for a further development of the ADELINE system. Aim of this work is a further improvement of user interfaces based on the inclusion of new dialogs and on a portation of the program system from MS-DOS to the Windows NT platform. Additional focus is laid on the use of recent developments in the field of information technology and experiences gained in other projects on integrated building design systems, like for example EU-COMBINE, in a pragmatical way. An integrated building design system with open standardized interfaces is to be achieved inter alia by using ISOSTEP formats, database technologies and a consequent, object-oriented design.

title Estratégias de reconfiguração do espaço urbano – cidade superfície: diálogos entre arte e cidade mediados por intervenções artísticas em fachadas e muros na cidade de São Paulo [Urban space reconfiguration strategies - surface city: dialogs between art and city mediated through artistic interventions on facades and walls in the city of São Paulo]
source SIGraDi 2011 [Proceedings of the 15th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Argentina - Santa Fe 16-18 November 2011, pp. 526-529
summary This paper discusses multiple aspects of the city through examples of artistic interventions which see the city as complex and dynamic layers in constant change. This paper investigates the spatial configuration changes of São Paulo city in material surfaces as facades and walls. The understanding of urban surfaces as "'mediative' spatiality" (Ferrara, 2008) assigns communication categories to urban surfaces; the visual condition is discussed in this paper.

title Visualizing the Unknown in Historical Vernacular Architecture: Making Speculation from Archaeological Fragments Explicit
source RESPECTING FRAGILE PLACES [29th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-9-4912070-1-3], University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Architecture (Slovenia) 21-24 September 2011, pp.868-874

summary Computer based visualization tools have the capacity to create convincing reconstructions of historical structures that appear to be authentic and complete but where inferences have been drawn from relatively limited evidence. The challenge is how to make the exciting process of discovery, argument and reasoning more self-evident in the model and also make known the alternative constructions that were plausible but less likely. This paper refers to two computer visualizations developed by the author for world heritage building sites. In both cases, a similar geometrical modeling technique was used. However, in the second case, the 3D modeling approach is developed for juxtaposition with captured dialogs, the evidence used, and the process followed so as to make level of speculation more explicit.

title Expressão de pontos de vista e os meios digitais: o uso de graffiti digital e projeção de comentários como ferramentas para obtenção de informações em ações culturais [Expression of viewpoints and The Digital Media]
source SIGraDi 2014 [Proceedings of the 18th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-9974-99-655-7] Uruguay - Montevideo 12 - 14 November 2014, pp. 72-75
summary The evaluation of previous research carried out by Nomads.usp - Center of Interactive Living Studies - which used several classical methodological instruments of qualitative research in order to understand urban and social contexts, found limits of these tools when they were employed to encompass nuances related to ways of life, worldviews and viewpoints of surveyed individuals. The aim of this reseach is to verify the limits and the possibilities of using two activities conceived for usage in cultural events with audience’s presence - Digital Graffiti and Comment’s Projection -, in a matter of utilizing it as well as procedures for gathering informations about its audiences by proposing communication processes and dialogs, with the aid of digital media.

title Informal conversation environment for collaborative concept formation
source Community Computing: Collaboration over Global Information Networks, eds. T. Ishida. John Wiley & Sons
summary This chapter focuses on facilitating the early stages of community formation. We spend a great deal of time every day in informal conversations, which are very important for the early stages of forming various kinds of communities. People engaged in conversation will not only share information, but also try to listen to and understand others, and as well as work together to find common objectives. In the early stages of forming the communities, agreement on a common concept through such a process is an essential element in the bonding of the group. Conversation environments on networked computers, e.g., via e-mail, online chat, and news groups, eliminate the spatial and temporal constraints of forming these communities but allow for the reuse of accumulated dialogs from previous interactions. Moreover, a computerized environment can directly support information sharing and mutual understanding. Conventional computerized conversation support systems, however, often force their users to follow some predetermined conversation model, prepared by designers beforehand. Thus, it can be difficult to apply these systems to informal conversations. We are developing a system called AIDE (Augmented Informative Discussion Environment) that facilitates our informal daily conversations. It does not require users to provide additional information in designated forms during a conversation, but rather it provides functionality to enhance and support the informal conversation. AIDE features three main functions: the discussion viewer, the conversationalist agent and the personal desktop. Using these functions, the participants can attain mutual understanding, crystallize ideas, and share common concepts. AIDE is considered to be not only a tool for supporting informal conversation but also useful Communityware, especially for facilitating the initial stage of community formation. This chapter first discusses a model of the group thinking process and applies it to community formation. Then, the structure of the AIDE system is presented using a few example conversations to illustrate how the AIDE system can support communication between people. AIDE displays potential as communityware.

title Beyond HCI: Colaboratives graphic interfaces.
source SIGraDi 2005 - [Proceedings of the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Lima - Peru 21-24 november 2005, vol. 2, pp. 773-777
summary This article intends to present a research work in process which targets the production of design principles for multi-users graphic interfaces, allowing the creation of dialog spaces for a communitarian purpose, using the knowledge from system-user and user-interface interaction and from semiotic and cognitive psychology. It blends studies in both technological and perceptive fields, focusing on interfaces production with a non-linear structure, with an associative navigability, mostly commanded by signs and graphic elements of easy comprehension. The research goal is to understand how to allow users to build an individualized portion of cyberspace, where dialogs can be established with other community members. This work is part of Nomads.usp, Center for Habitation and Ways of Living Studies - University of São Paulo, that studies and produces criteria to rethink nowadays spaces design, considering its recent history, the transformations occurred in families groups, and its behavior tendencies. summary As the current digitally-mediated architectural practice evolves, architectural models, regardless of their expressiveness or type, are a way to craft the interaction between the designer and the designed object. Models become artefacts that engage on a continuous interaction with the designer via different media, interpretation and knowledge retrieval schemes, organizational fl ows and tools. These interactions have recently been facilitated by the use of physical and digital production and analysis methods. In this report, we introduce a novel understanding of the relationships between physical and digital modelling techniques. We propose an updated framework that allocates these relationships into four categories: directed production, non-directed production, dual modelling, and mixed modelling. A review of different modelling classifications and frameworks is presented and exemplary case studies from the design domain are introduced for each category.

title A Virtual Reality Modeling Tool for Students of Architecture
source University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong
summary During a collaborative design session with other universities, several shortcomings, namely long communication response time, lack of common data format for design and ineffective discussion using static image of design, were observed. A solution was proposed by providing a design interface, a. viewing area of the design and a database to store designs and discussion dialogs. This thesis described a VR (virtual reality) modeling tool, the "VR Composer". With the "VR Composer", models are created directly in 3D. This is the design interface of the solution. The "VR Composer" is based on a commercially available VR software. With a head-mounted display, the "VR Composer" immerses the user into a VR environment. This provides a feeling of presence inside the VR environment. New functionality was added to allow user to create and modify objects in VR. There is no common definition for VR.. I have defined VR as Virtual reality is a human-computer interfiwe which allows a user to visualize and interact with the computer-generated three-dimensional environment intuitively. The students of Department of Architecture are requested to test the VR Composer. Although the VR Composer provided basic functionality as a modeling tool, it has to be improvement in many aspects to become an effective tool for modeling.
