summary In this research project we explore the defined design and application of digitally fabricated wall panels for room-acoustical architectural interventions. In Particular, we investigate the room-acoustical criteria applying to everyday used spaces. We present a digital design and fabrication process developed to create non-standardised panels and two case studies which apply this process on the acoustical improvement of a specific room situation. Our aim is to find correlations between digitally fabricated surface structures and sound- aesthetical characteristics, in order to utilise these for the architectural design.

title Adaptive Mesh Generation for Global Diffuse Illumination

summary Rapid developments in the design of algorithms for rendering globally illuminated scenes have taken place in the past five years. Net energy methods such as the hemicube and other radiosity algorithms have become very effective a t computing the energy balance for scenes containing diffusely reflecting objects. Such methods first break up a scene description into a relatively large number of elements, or possibly sev- eral levels of elements. Energy transfers among these ele- ments are then determined using a variety of means. While much progress has been made in the design of energy transfer algorithms, little or no attention has been paid to the proper generation of the mesh of surface elements. This pa- per presents a technique for adaptively creating a mesh of surface elements as the energy transfers are computed. The method allows large numbers of small elements to be placed at parts of the scene where the most active energy trans- fers occur without requiring that other parts of the scene be needlessly subdivided to the same degree. As a result, the computational effort in the energy transfer computations can be concentrated where it has the most effect. summary This paper analyses a hybrid design approach; how physical and digital processes can inform each other in a multivalent design cycle. It describes the design of origami-inspired window shades, part of the Shaping Light project that explores how adjustable surface structures can modulate light levels and heat gain in response to the changing seasons. The screen uses sloped surfaces to diffuse light and create apertures that close when the screen is stretched and open when the screen is folded. The project complements digital methods for pattern proportioning and kinetic simulation with manual manipulation to generate 3D folding motifs and refi ne assemblies. Physical prototypes can shape digital refi nement by revealing visual and structural characteristics of materials, along with joint and production considerations. Physical models for simulating sunny and cloudy daylighting conditions provide a direct connection between spatial confi guration and visual effects. The paper concludes with guidelines for material-based digital-analog creation.

summary This paper presents a comprehensive method to calculate object to object diffuse reflections within complex environments containing hidden surfaces and shadows. In essence, each object in the environment is treated as a secondary light source. The method provides an accurate representation of the 'diffuse' and 'ambient' terms found in typical image synthesis algorithms. The phenomena of 'color bleeding' from one surface to another, shading within shadow envelopes, and penumbras along shadow boundaries are accurately reproduced. Additional advantages result because computations are independent of viewer position. This allows the efficient rendering of multiple views of the same scene for dynamic sequences. Light sources can be modulated and object reflectivities can be changed, with minimal extra computation. The procedures extend the radiosity method beyond the bounds previously imposed

summary This paper describes ongoing research into how emerging Internet concepts used in conjunction with existing Information Technologies (IT) can improve inter-project communication and understanding. The emphasis of the research is to use technology as an enabler to share personal thoughts and enhance the conversation that takes place within a development team. It stems from the observation that the emphasis of many new Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) technologies is to minimise and diffuse project conversation with highly complex, machine interpretable building information models.Project teams are usually brought together for a relatively short but intense period of time. Following project completion these unique teams are dissolved just as quickly and often are never formed again. As a consequence it is difficult to justify the investment in time and resources required to implement complex IT-based collaboration solutions. A further barrier to adoption is the differential application of IT skills across the AEC industry. Therefore in order for a new technology to gain broad acceptance and be most beneficial it must be applicable to the broadest audience with the minimum investment required from all parties. The primary objective of this research is to preserve the rich design history of a project from conception to completion. Submitted information can be intelligently searched using the meta-data sourced from syndicated data feeds about team members, project timelines, work diaries and email communication. Once indexed users can tag documents and messages in order to provide a further, far richer layer of meta-data to assist in searching, identification of issues and semantic clarification. This strategy of defining AEC semantics through social interaction differs greatly from that of more complex, computer interpretable solutions such as Industry Foundation Classes. Rather than abstracting information to suit a generic yet highly intelligent building model, the emphasis is on preserving the participant’s own thoughts and conversation about decisions and issues in order to create a forum for intelligent conversation as the design evolves.

title Computational Derivation of Incident Irradiance on Building Facades based on Measured Global Horizontal Irradiance Data

summary Reliable simulation of buildings' energy performance requires, amongst other things, the availability of detailed information on the magnitudes of incident solar radiation on building facades. However, the availability of the measured data concerning the incident solar radiation on vertical surfaces is restricted to only few locations. In addition, concurrent measurements of horizontal global and horizontal diffuse (or direct normal) irradiance data are likewise available only for a limited number of locations. In contrast, global horizontal irradiance data is available for many locations. This research demonstrates how to computationally derive incident irradiance values on vertical (or otherwise inclined) building surfaces from measured globalirradiance values. Given this context, three methods are considered to compute incident vertical irradiance values based on measured global horizontal irradiance data. Vertical solar irradiance measurements are described. Then, the computationally derived values are compared withcorresponding measurements. The results are evaluated based on their correlation coefficients and relative error. Finally, the application of horizontal-to- vertical irradiance mapping is demonstrated using the case of an office building at Vienna University of Technology.

summary Building envelope design incorporates a range of light-related analyses, often providing an essential feedback loop for shaping an envelope’s performance, geometry, or components. This is true for solar radiation studies of envelopes, calculated irrespective of building material or assembly. Extending our light-related analysis to include diffuse lighting effects on a building interior presents an opportunity to explore the translucency, porosity, and forms of materials. Glazed architectural ceramic components fabricated using adaptive robotic manufacturing provide an opportunity to exploit material dynamics within the design and alleviate fabrication waste from molds, ultimately accelerating the production manufacturing system. In addition to analyzing the solar radiation on the building facade design, lighting effects can be engaged in profoundly different ways depending on the degree of design-production agency. The production process can be extended beyond automatic routines using robotic fabrication with levels of autonomous involvement that allow for alternative form expressions of the dynamic clay material. In addition to negotiating several design criteria, the design research will develop an aesthetic character originating from customized clay materials and robotic manufacturing processes for lighting transmittance architectural ceramics.

title Discontinuity Meshing for Radiosity

summary The radiosity method is the most popular algorithm for simulating interreflection of light between diffuse surfaces. Most existing radiosity algorithms employ simple meshes and piecewise constant approximations, thereby constraining the radiosity function to be constant across each polygonal element. Much more accurate simulations are possible if linear, quadratic, or higher degree approximations are used. In order to realize the potential accuracy of higher-degree approximations, however, it is necessary for the radiosity mesh to resolve discontinuities such as shadow edges in the radiosity function. A discontinuity meshing algorithm is presented that places mesh boundaries directly along discontinuities. Such algorithms offer the potential of faster, more accurate simulations. Results are shown for three-dimensional scenes.

summary This paper documents and critically reflects upon the design, development, fabrication, and implementation of three pavilion projects developed during 2013-14. The core investigation of this work is the production of architectural spaces characterized by a quality of enveloping, diffuse, visual and spatial atmospheres. The principal activity of the research is aimed at refining methods for software-based exploration of formal complexities and the subsequent need to control variability and efficiency in fabrication output, using Grasshopper for Rhino to develop customized definitions particular to each specific project scenario. Linking the projects together are issues of scale, resolution of effect, and intent to move from disparate assemblies of structure and skin toward composite, manifold construction techniques that address multiple concerns (gravity, bracing, affect, etc) with a minimum of assembly. A material palette common to the current vernacular of CNC-based projects such as plywood, plastics, and other sheet materials is utilised. This work is invested in extending the possibilities of the architect and architecture as a discipline, extrapolating the workflow from these successive projects to the speculative impact of the work upon emerging possibilities of architectural construction and craft.

title Discontinuity Meshing for Accurate Radiosity

summary We discuss the problem of accurately computing the illumination of a diffuse polyhedral environment due to an area light source. We show how umbra and penumbra boundaries and other illumination details correspond to discontinuities in the radiance function and its derivatives. The shape, location, and order of these discontinuities is determined by the geometry of the light sources and obstacles in the environment. We describe an object-space algorithm that accurately reproduces the radiance across a surface by constructing a discontinuity mesh that explicitly represents various discontinuities in the radiance function as boundaries between mesh elements. A piecewise quadratic interpolant is used to approximate the radiance function, preserving the discontinuities associated with the edges in the mesh. This algorithm can be used in the framework of a progressive refinement radiosity system to solve the diffuse global illumination problem. Results produced by the new method are compared with ones obtained using a standard radiosity system.

title An Experimental Evaluation of Computer Graphics Imagery

summary Accurate simulation of light propagation within an environment and perceptually based imaging techniques are necessary for the creation of realistic images. A physical experiment that verifies the simulation of reflected light intensities for diffuse environments was conducted. Measurements of radiant energy flux densities are compared with predictions using the radiosity method for those physical environments. By using color science procedures the results of the light model simulation are then transformed to produce a color television image. The final image compares favorably with the original physical model. The experiment indicates that, when the physical model and the simulation were viewed through a view camera, subjects could not distinguish between them. The results and comparison of both test procedures are presented within this paper.

summary A sky simulator has been developed to study daylighting systems on scale models (diffuse component of daylight). This apparatus is of a completely new concept (scanning sky simulator) and has numerous advantages in comparison with similar devices. It allows in particular the reproduction of any sky condition and distinguishes itself by easy calibration, reduced maintenance and moderate electric consumption. The simulator is equipped with a measuring and visualisation system which allows the user to simultaneously carry out quantitative studies (profile of daylight factors) and qualitative studies (visual lighting effects). In this paper, a description of the system and its functioning as well as an application example are given.

summary The experience of the Laboratories is not new for Rome. In 1993 the Historical Heritage Office of the Municipality came to an agreement with the Dioguardi Co. to found the Laboratory of Ghetto - the ancient Jewish quarter - with the following objectives: to offer space and tools to analyse public and private proposals for buildings restoration; to collect, elaborate and diffuse data and information about the neighbourhood; to involve inhabitants and train some of them in renewal and restoration activities through the creation of a "pilot yard". The data gathered in the Laboratory were elaborated and used to produce an hypertext which could be consulted by inhabitants. A section of this hypertext showed all the restoration projects, public and private ones (Sivo 1995).

summary Adaptability is an essential principle for space multifunctionality. Given that different purposes set different acoustic requirements, adapting one space to different uses is a challenge. Thus, the paper presents a design proposal for a kinetic suspended ceiling made of canvas membrane, implemented in the test performance hall. Such a design aims to improve the control of the reverberation time in the hall. The kinetic structure is divided into panels with the possibility of changing the position in height and rotation. The panels' rotation leads to the structure's unfolding, which leads to the acoustic joining of the hall space with the ceiling interspace, and the diffuse reflection of sound. Experimental modeling simulation using the Odeon software tool and numerical calculation using Sabin's equation is applied for the research. The research was carried out in two phases. In the first phase, a software model examined the influence of the rotation angle from 0° (flat ceiling) to 90° (completely open ceiling) on the reverberation time. In the second phase, through a comparative analysis of the test model with an implemented suspended ceiling at different heights, the influence of the position of the ceiling in height in combination with the panel rotation was simultaneously examined. The study results in a new approach to the design of folding structures with the possibility of simple installation in existing spaces of performance halls and knowledge of how this type of structure can enable the control of the reverberation time in the hall.

title Object shape and reflectance modeling from observation

summary An object model for computer graphics applications should contain two aspects of information: shape and reflectance properties of the object. A number of techniques have been developed for modeling object shapes by observing real objects. In contrast, attempts to model reflectance properties of real objects have been rather limited. In most cases, modeled reflectance properties are too simple or too complicated to be used for synthesizing realistic images of the object. In this paper, we propose a new method for modeling object reflectance properties, as well as object shapes, by observing real objects. First, an object surface shape is reconstructed by merging multiple range images of the object. By using the reconstructed object shape and a sequence of color images of the object, parameters of a reflection model are estimated in a robust manner. The key point of the proposed method is that, first, the diffuse and specular reflection components are separated from the color image sequence, and then, reflectance parameters of each reflection component are estimated separately. This approach enables estimation of reflectance properties of real objects whose surfaces show specularity as well as diffusely reflected lights. The recovered object shape and reflectance properties are then used for synthesizing object images with realistic shading effects under arbitrary illumination conditions.

summary The interface-space of the forum for sustainable tourism constitutes a mediation threshold intended to exchanges between different semiotic systems, which stimulate dynamic processes of interaction, dialogue y negotiation in sociotechnical networks. The basis, methodological procedures and main results of the project are exposed, as well as the design and evaluation principles for habitable interface-spaces that guide the proposals. Finally, the paper outlines relevant actions for addressing collaborative construction processes related to social, communicative, technical and institutional dimensions.
