title Sensing Material Systems - Novel Design Strategies

summary The development of new building materials has decisively influenced the progression of architecture through the link between built form and available material systems. The new generation of engineered materials are no exception. However, to fully utilise these materials in the design process, there is a need for designers to understand how these new materials perform. In this paper we propose a method for sensing and representing the response of materials to external stimuli, at the early design stage, to help the designer establish a material awareness. We present a novel approach for embedding capacitive sensors into material models in order to improve material performance of designs. The method was applied and tested during two workshops, both discussed in this paper. The outcome is a method for anticipating engineered material behaviour.

summary This paper reports the design, fabrication and evaluation strategies of full-scale aluminium panel prototypes developed for a kinetic hybrid facade system. The concept of a hybrid facade system was proposed as a solution to maximise the value of kinetic intelligent building systems by repurposing the animation sunscreening as a low-resolution media display. The overarching research project investigates the potential, feasibility and real-life applications of a hybrid facade that integrates the: environmental, media and individual micro-control functions in one compound system that operates through autonomous wirelessly controlled hexagonal rotating panels. The study explores new ways of communication and connectivity in architectural and urban context, utilising and fusing together a wide range of technologies including: artificial intelligence, robotics, wireless control technologies, calibration of physical and digital simulations, development of fully autonomous self-organised and powered units and the use of additive digital manufacturing. This article reports the third research stage of the hybrid facade project development - the manufacture of full scale panel prototypes.

title A responsive morphing media skin

summary Existing media façades do not function as fenestration devices. They have been used mainly for visual communication and aesthetic purposes. This paper introduces a responsive morphing skin that can act as an active fenestration device as well as a media skin. We investigate new possibilities of using form-changing materials in designing responsive morphing skins that respond to environmental conditions and act as a communicative display. The design experiment that embodied this investigation, namely Blind, serves as a new layer of analogue media brise-soleil for existing space. It communicates the relationships between interior and exterior spaces visually and projects mutable imageries to the surrounding environment through sunlight. The design process of Blind simulates the responsive behaviour of the intended architectural skin by integrating physical computing and parametric design tools. This process includes the integration of soft apertures and architectural morphing skin to introduce a novel design method that enables an architectural skin to be a means of communication and fenestration. It responds to changing stimuli and intends to improve the spatial quality of existing environments through two types of transformations: morphological and patterned.

summary Contemporary responsive architecture often tries to achieve optimised building performance in response to changing environmental conditions. In the precedents a key area of responsiveness is in the building façades or skins. Often however, the skin is made from discrete components and separated equipment. T his research explores the potential for designing responsive architectural morphing skins with kinetic materials that have integrated sensing and luminous abilities. Instead of embedded individual discrete components, this approach intends to integrate the sensing devices and building skins as one ‘single’ entity. This investigation is conducted by project. The project is Blanket, which aims to provide an alternative approach for a lightweight, fl exible and economical sensory architectural skin that respond to proximity and lighting stimuli.

title Designing elastic transformable structures: Towards soft responsive architecture

summary This paper discusses the issues of designing and building environment involving spatial conditions that can be physically reconfigured to meet changing needs. To achieve this architectural vision, most current research focuses on the kinetic, mechanical systems and physical control mechanisms for actuation and structural transformation. Instead of the ‘hard’ mechanical joints and components, there is an unexplored ‘soft’ approach using lightweight elastic composite materials for designing responsive architectural skins and structures. This paper investigates the new possibilities for the manipulation of various architectural enclosures using ‘soft’ and elastic transformable structures, in response to environmental, communication and adapting to various contexts. This approach intends to minimise the mechanistic actuations and reduce weight for such operations. Therefore, this research introduces two modules (a tetrahedron and a cube) as responsive spatial models to test the potentials and limitations for the implementation of elastic materials with responsive capability towards reconfigurable architectural enclosure. Despite their individual differences, these experiments identify a trajectory for new possibilities for elastic architectural components that are more appropriate for ‘soft’ responsive architecture. We argue that this approach can provide an early hypothesis for design responsive architecture with a mix of passive and active design strategies.

summary Interface design is one of the main research areas in human- computer interaction (HCI). In computer science, many HCI research- ers and designers explore novel interface designs with cutting-edge technology, but few investigate alternative interfaces for existing built environments, especially in the area of architecture. In this paper, we investigate alternative interface designs for existing architectural ele- ments—such as walls, floors, and ceilings—that can be created with off-the-shelf materials. Instead of merely serving as discrete sensing and display devices integrated to an existing building’s surface, these liquid and thin materials act as interventions that can be ‘painted’ on a surface, transforming it into an architectural interface. This interface, Painterface, is a responsive material intervention that serves as an an- alogue, wall-type media interface that senses and responds to people’s actions. Painterface is equipped with three sensing and responsive ca- pacities: touch, sound, and light. While the interface’s touch capacity performs tactile sensing, its sound-production and illumination capaci- ties emit notes and light respectively. The outcomes of this research suggest the possibility of a simple, inexpensive, replaceable, and even disposable interface that could serve as an architectural intervention applicable to existing building surfaces.

summary Synthetic biomaterials are not only widely explored in tissue engineering, but also present important opportunities in responsive architecture, especially soft structures and skins. In this paper we present how water-containing hydrogels can be adapted to digital fabrication techniques to design a soft responsive skin with integrated skeleton and surface. This research project details preliminary investigation into how tough hydrogels with different material properties can be designed and incorporated into laser-cutting and 3D printing methods typically used in architectural design. The outcome of this research produces an early prototype of thermally sensitive, tough hydrogel skin that responds to environmental stimuli such as temperature and moisture. Our work provides initial insights into how a soft responsive "bio-structural" architectural skin can be designed by integrating actuation, structure, and skins.

summary Vertical farms and gardens are not new in dense urban environments, but few examples further explore the architectural potential and possibilities of the form to apply the same design approach to existing surfaces and walls of buildings. In addition, there is a design opportunity to exploit existing wall surfaces as 'analogue' media screens by using the vertical farm and garden as a medium of representation. In this paper we explore the opportunity for new design possibilities to achieve a hybrid architectural wall system as a reciprocal retrofit for existing building surfaces, integrating a vertical micro-farm and media screen. This architectural opportunity is explored through agile methods and the early design stages of a hybrid green media wall, PixelGreen. PixelGreen will be retrofitted to an existing wall of a high-rise building to convey mediated, graphical, artistic content and provide edible plant micro-farming simultaneously. The physical proof of concept is given through a modular mock-up with a programmed UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) serving as the 'agent' for constant updating of mediated content, maintenance and a regular farming cycle. The outcome of this approach provides preliminary insight into how to feasibly implement a hybrid green media wall with autonomous robotics and computation technology.

summary Recent advances in miniature mobile robotic research have generated possibilities and potentials in a range of fields such as the military, rescue operations, logistics and education. Within architecture, especially in responsive architecture and architectural interface disciplines, there has been minimal uptake of this technology, and so its full potential and implications have not been fully explored. In this paper, we propose a design exploration of a human-building interface (HBI) with multiple mobile robots serving as 'physical pixels', which investigates the latent possibilities of public interactive displays and media screens, potentially provoking interaction with existing built environments. The outcomes of this paper include an early-stage design study of an HBI prototype, PixelFace, which has been developed with multiple spherical mobile robots and an existing building structure. An early physical implementation of the HBI as an interactive public display with real-time physical movement that encourages playful interaction is also included.

summary This paper focuses on an investigation to explore architectural design potentials with a responsive material system and physical computing. Contemporary architects and designers are seeking to integrate physical computing in responsive architectural designs; however, they have largely borrowed from engineering technology’s mechanical devices and components. There is the opportunity to investigate an unexplored design approach to exploit the responsive capacity of material properties as alternatives to the current focus on mechanical components and discrete sensing devices. This opportunity creates a different design paradigm for responsive architecture that investigates the potential to integrate physical computing with responsive materials as one integrated material system. Instead of adopting highly intricate and expensive materials, this approach is explored through accessible and off-the-shelf materials to form a responsive material system, called Lumina. Lumina is implemented as an architectural installation called Cloud that serves as a morphing architectural skin. Cloud is a proof of concept to embody a responsive material system with physical computing to create a reciprocal and luminous architectural intervention for a selected dark corridor. It represents a different design paradigm for responsive architecture through alternative exploitation of contemporary materials and parametric design tools.

summary Most designers of dynamic building skins that reconfigure themselves in changing conditions have utilised mechanical systems. However, when designing for dynamic responsiveness, these systems often involve intricate and high-tech mechanistic joints, actuators and control. This research investigates the possibility of the ‘soft’ form-changing material systems to minimise the use of ‘hard’ mechanical components for kinetic responsive architectural skins. The research goal is to develop a prototype system that can be used to retrofit an existing building with an application of a ‘second skin’ that performs well in various climate conditions and is visually compelling. This approach is tested by the prototype, namely “Curtain”. It serves two fundamental purposes: Comfort and Cosmetic, to improve the existing interior and exterior spatial conditions. As an early proposition, the significance of this research offers a practical method for realising a ‘soft’ transformable architectural skin that synthesises passive cooling, manipulates sunlight and is set as an active shading device. Parametric design is used to explore and simulate these climatic and visual design constraints.

summary This paper presents the design of a novel material system with sensing, form-changing and luminous capacities for responsive and kinetic architecture. This aim is explored and evaluated through an experimental design investigation in the form of an architectural skin. Through experimentation with alternative materials and a rigorous process of designing the responsive material systems,a new architectural skin, namely Blanket, emerged from this research. The newly developed responsive material system is an amalgamation of silicone rubbers and glowing pigments, molded and fabricated in a prescribed way—embedded with shape memory alloys on a tensegrity skeletal structure to achieve the desired morphing properties and absorb solar energy to glow in the dark.Thus, the design investigation explores the potential of the use of form-changing materials with capacitance sensing, energy absorbing and illumination capabilities for a morphing architectural skin that is capable of responding to proximity and lighting stimuli. This lightweight, flexible and elastic architectural morphing skin is designed to minimize the use of discrete mechanical components. It moves towards an integrated “synthetic” morphing architecture that can sense and respond to environmental and occupancy conditions.

summary This paper discusses the issues of designing architectural skins that can be physically morphed to adapt to changing needs.To achieve this architectural vision, designers have focused on developing mechanical joints, components, and systems for actuation and kinetic transformation. However, the unexplored approach of using lightweight elastic form-changing materials provides an opportunity for designing responsive architectural skins and skeletons with fewer mechanical operations. This research aims to develop elastic modular systems that can be applied as a second skin or brise-soleil to existing buildings.The use of the second skin has the potential to allow existing buildings to perform better in various climatic conditions and to provide a visually compelling skin.This approach is evaluated through three design experiments with prototypes, namely Tent, Curtain and Blind, to serve two fundamental purposes: Comfort and Communication.These experimental prototypes explore the use of digital and physical computation embedded in form-changing materials to design architectural morphing skins that manipulate sunlight and act as responsive shading devices.

summary Virtual reconstruction of the ancient Chinese Chang'an city has been continued for ten years at the National University of Singapore. Motivated by sharing this grand city with people who are geographically distant and equipped with normal personal computers, this paper presents a practical Grid-enabled visualization infrastructure that is suitable for interactive visualization of large-scale architectural models. The underlying Grid services, such as information service, visualization planner and execution container etc, are developed according to the OGSA standard. To tackle the critical problem of Grid visualization, i.e. data size and network bandwidth, a multi-stage data compression approach is deployed and the corresponding data pre-processing, rendering and remote display issues are systematically addressed.
