title Computational Aesthetics of Low Poly: [Re]Configuration of Form

summary Low-poly modeling as an emerging field in visual arts, product design and architecture has an essential effect both on the designer's and the viewer/user's experience. It has an advanced abstraction ability over the reconfiguration of form. This paper examines the visual features of low-poly form in terms of the computability of its aesthetics. A visual feature classification is made by referencing George David Birkhoff's aesthetic measure theory based on the complexity and order relationship. Topo[i]wall installation has been examined as a case study during the analysis. The relationship between form, computation, aesthetics and human-computer interaction are elaborated according to the results. It has been observed that low poly modeling offers a variation set in terms of compositional features, which are proportion, balance, vertical and horizontal network system while protecting its unity through the analysis of the generated computational model.

summary Re-coding post-war Syria is an ongoing research and data platform, focused on innovation and collecting comprehensive, infrastructural and socioeconomic analytics, synchronization data, by using AI driven to give a more transparent image of innovating a new methodology to regenerate the future of post-war smart cities into advanced and sustainable urban environments in a smarter way (Fig. 1). The pressure to achieve a rapid Post-war smart city without clear strategy and comprehensive analysis of all aspects will cause a particularly catastrophic collapse in the interconnected social structure, services, education and health care system, leaving a long-term impact on the society. This paper presents the current status of the Research & Documentation methodology in the Data Collection phase by the objective investigations conducted through a series of local and international workshops species developed in this research called “Re-Coding“, offering consequent direct ground surveys, statistics and documentation study of the targeted areas, merging professionalism and youth power with local community to detect an open source data used as a tool to re-generate a precarious area towards a new methodology.

summary This paper addresses the importance and development of cultural transformations involving the design process in architecture and the advent of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in civil construction activities and how its implementation in a coordinated, collaborative and interoperable way contributes to a diagnosis of Clash Detection between diferentes design projects, before building construction, saving excessive costs and rework. Taking as its main reference the BIM Maturity Matrix of Succar (2009), the proposed BIM Project Integration Maturity Matrix contributes to the awareness of bringing designers and builders closer to design activities, to encourage the integration of design processes involving the building, to consolidate an environment of ease of communication between participants, the organization of documentation and, above all, prioritize the compatibility between projects to avoid conflicts, excess costs and rework, resulting in a higher quality of the final project.

title Architecture and Context: A Data-based Approach to Optimize Climate Performance of Built Facades

summary The present research stems from a critical reflection about the environmental adaptability of existing building envelopes. The main goal is to explore how to balance environmental optimization with contextual constraints, using modularity, flexibility and mass customization as guiding principles. An application study was carried out with the development of a second skin proposal aligned with the use and context of the building under study. For this purpose, simulations that assess environmental conditions were developed within a visual programming tool, not only feeding the design process with essential information, but also providing a flexible creative process. Results show that such simulations allow the designer to interpret these studies more accurately, reducing the iterative guesswork, since in this workflow it is possible to transform these outputs into proposition parameters for new designs or interventions.

title TEC-House: Itinerant Modular Space Based on Digital Fabrication

summary The academy aims to understand and insert digital technologies in the collaborative, interdisciplinary and innovative process. Thus, the process of this project aims to develop an itinerant space that enables integration between academics and the community, associated with digital technologies, making it essential as a precursor of knowledge, innovation and social well-being. Based on concepts from Smart City and Smart Campus, as it addresses a phenomenon of development intrinsic to technological processes in pursuit of environmental quality, it appropriates of digital manufacturing tools as a programmatic production model. Inspired by the generation of physical objects from digital models along the lines of Wikihouse, a modular architectural executive method was developed as an alternative for flexibility and movement. At the end of the process, there is the conception of the TEC-House, idealized as an itinerant modular space, based on anthropometric parameters where function determines the way they integrate, constituting modifying places.

We develop a speculative vision/plan for the Biscayne Bay estuary that envisions infrastructures that grow by themselves using synthetic biology. summary Despite the complexity of parametric modeling, it is possible to apply it in educational context with a simpler approach. The COVID-19 pandemic increased the use of active methodologies in education. Gamification, particularly, should be emphasized regarding its association with parametric modeling. Post-pandemic scenario made possible the reinsertion of traditional practices, thus adding successful learning methods from online teaching. This paper aims to compare the adoption of parameterization and gamification to teach Descriptive Geometry on both teaching scenarios: online and presential. Two experiments were implemented to four Technical Drawing classes - A and B (2021), C and D (2022) -, in high school and technician level. The quantitative results addressed to the efficiency of parametric modeling as a didactic tool, and the qualitative results indicated that the students accepted the experiences of parameterization and gamification, on both scenarios. Nevertheless, there were subtle differences between the results from online and presential scenarios.

summary This research presents a new direction for freeform structure assembly and fabrication through the collaboration of 3D printing technology and Japanese wood joining technology. Full-scale, self-build prototyping is demonstrated without glue or metal fittings. Rather than relying on digital fabrication machines to match the architectural scale, this study utilizes the Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) with desktop 3D printers, which is the most widespread and inexpensive printing technology. By incorporating the perspectives of wood joinery and compact 3D printers, this study promotes a drastic change in 3D printed architectural production from a massive structure-oriented system to a module-oriented system. The project demonstrates how artisanal knowledge integrates with 3D printing architectural production by reconfiguring joint geometry, parametric modeling, fabrication, and assembly processes. We discuss our research process and final achievements, and we provide new ideas for architectural production using digital fabrication.

summary Undergraduate design studies for digital fabrication and non-standard architecture are complex as their participants are usually far from systems thinking and have a basic level of confidence in the use of advanced digital tools. Furthermore, in the face of high formal complexity, the understanding of the structural system and its effects for the inhabitant are not evident. This work presents an implementation of Virtual Reality to introduce Latin American architecture university students to digital fabrication and parametric design, taking as its main premise that during the initial design stage, the designed architecture using virtual reality techniques and spatial perception can engage students to appreciate the value in these new designs, formulating new arguments and paradigms to further contribute to their training as contemporary professionals.

summary This paper introduces an application study that analyzes environmental variables in existing buildings, focusing on the area of thermal and luminous quality. The object of study is an academic office building, where adaptability emerges as a pivotal feature to provide environmental quality to the occupants. The analysis methodology was based on the use of parametric simulations that allow to explore different scenarios and solutions, in addition, an on-site measurement was carried out for a better understanding of the object of study. In this research, the potential of parametric technologies is analyzed as an auxiliary tool in design decisions, which seeks to explore possibilities, rearranging variables to reach better environmental solutions.

summary The purpose of this study is the quantification of the exposure of occupants to daylight illuminance levels. The case study is the typical floor of a patient tower occupied by nurses in twelve hours shifts, from 7 am to 7 pm. Significant evidence exists regarding the positive impact of access to daylight on staff outcomes in healthcare facilities in terms of reduction of stress, absenteeism, medication errors, and burn outs. However, the standard daylight simulation methods evaluate the building and do not capture the dynamic nature of people’s behavior while moving through the space. The proposed approach combines agent-based simulation and daylight performance analysis to compute the occupants’ exposure to daylight levels throughout the year. The results show the discrepancies between building-centric and human-centric types of analysis and the contribution of dynamic simulation methods to design occupancy schedules to warranty equitable access to daylight to building occupants.

summary The purpose of this experience consisted of linking two methodologies usually used exclusively in the study of the design operation in the university academic environment: working with cardboard models and augmented reality. The methodology used consisted of work in groups based on skills to build cardboard models, to model in 3D, and to work with augmented reality. They developed interior space designs through the interaction of physical models (made of cardboard) and observed models on those physical models through systems equipped with applications to view augmented reality. Among the main results of this experience are the possibility of interacting with dynamic objects modeled in 3D in the physical field of the cardboard model, and the successful integration of two work methodologies (analog and digital), at least in one of the stages of the design operation.

summary The article presents and discusses the experience, methodology and results, of a design workshop held at the UNLaM. The proposal found its starting point in the registration of a current situation in which the architectural project is crossed by issues alien to a discipline whose principles are deeply speculative. Retrograde problems product of a conservative historical revival and emerging positions of political correctness trends distorting disciplinary purposes in proposals that have consolidated a desolate, unimaginative and banal disciplinary panorama. The KPY 1139 workshop proposed to return to the sources of a joyfully projective discipline, investigating the bases of the most eloquent projective narrative: science fiction cinema.

summary Are historiographic diagrams valid instruments for gauging the main constituent aspects of historiographic documentation of a body of architectural production? The paper aims to discuss the results obtained by algorithmic modeling and three-dimensional visualization of historiographic data. The analysis method proposes a diagrammatic approach to the research object, established from the fundamentals originally described by Zein (2020). The diagrams were created using the algorithmic modeling software Grasshopper, which allowed us to combine a precise recording of data with an original approach to its interpretation. From the data collected, Cartesian coordinates were established for the generation of curves and interpolation surfaces representative of the computed aspects of certain historiographic narratives. With wide application possibilities, the resulting algorithmic diagrams establish a new model for data analysis and visualization, which stands as a consistent alternative to other more commonly used digital bibliometric tools.

summary In the midst of a global pandemic crisis, this proposal seeks to solve a need for a synchronous and multi-user interactive virtual environment for the exhibition of artworks as part of an international illustrators encounter. This research shows a UX+XR design strategy based on UX methodology and the inclusion of parametric design for MUVEs that is framed in a UX+XR prototype for the exhibition, virtual-meeting place, and pedagogical experiential approach directed to defined users. The result, a virtual space named “Ilustremos” (let's illustrate) is created to promote creativity, celebrate art, create community and multidisciplinary collaboration.

summary Digital instruments are among the means of production of architecture. This improved productivity and reduced errors and inaccuracies in architectural design; however, in the case of parametric design, there is the risk of mistaking tools that may improve the overall quality of architecture for an approach that, as intrinsically scientific, guarantees quality architecture. This misunderstanding may characterise students’ first experience with parametric modelling. Therefore, a workshop has been developed as a seed to unfold the formal potentiality of parametric modelling with limited methodological bias and to inform on what to expect from parametric modelling. The workshop results show a preference for some parametric strategies over others. This tendency can be linked to those morphologies that, due to collective bias, are perceived as parametric; Consequently, the importance of working simultaneously on technical competence and cultural aspects of parametric architecture emerges as a necessity.

summary This paper is based on two main concepts: Concept Design and Artificial Intelligence (A.I.). According to Leach (2021), people are surrounded by A.I. in various aspects of daily life. This circumstance highlights the importance of creative professionals to interpret A.I. as a Design tool. The objective of this paper is to evaluate how A.I. can be used in early stages of the ideation process for the development of an artifact. The methodological framework is exploratory-descriptive and was developed through a case study. The practical contribution is to exemplify the simultaneous use of AI and Design tools in a simulation of the creative phase of a furniture project, this result was diagrammed to represent a systematization of where each tool fits into the creative process. The theoretical contribution is to add to the debate around this subject.

summary The use of Virtual Reality (VR) in teaching-learning process of design, theory and history of architecture has increased in terms of virtual tours. A preliminary study of techniques and capabilities of Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) systems allowed us to establish that the immersive and interactive virtual experience facilitates the perception and enhancement of spatial qualities. In addition, it facilitates analysis since it promotes observation and the development of spatial thinking. However, the use of this medium as a tool for analysis is less frequent. Therefore, in this research we comparatively evaluate the impact that VR has on such a task. We developed an analysis instrument using experiential learning cycles that was tested with students in control and experimental groups. As a result, we found that the experience of inhabiting facilitates integration of fundamental concepts, allowing empirical evaluation of architecture and streamlining communication in the classroom as an active learning strategy.

summary The work presents the experience of Digital Fabrication and Rapid Prototyping with the objective of introducing concepts of Homo Faber, digital fabrication and rapid prototyping through the adoption of a teaching-learning strategy by gamification Homo Ludens for the construction of collective furniture. This challenge incorporates, not only the instrumentalization of new technologies for users of the Workshop, but extrapolates this field to expand the exercise of reflecting on an activity focused on the process rather than on the product.
