title APPLICATION OF FULL-SCALE MODELLING IN VIETNAM: AN OUTLINE FOR DISCUSSION

summary This paper discusses the possibility of applying full-scale modelling in Vietnam, a non-western so called developing country. It deals with two main questions: 1) Is the application of full-scale modelling to be restricted to the West only? 2) what are the possibilities, constraints and fields of application - with attention to the methodological validity and technical solution for full-scale modelling in Vietnam? It is argued that since full-scale modelling is based on people-environment interaction, it should, in principle, apply to studies about people–environment relation anywhere on earth. On the methodological validity, it is discussed that application of full-scale modelling in Vietnam faces similar methodological problems as encountered in European applications (such as people's behaviour in experiment, ability to understand the abstraction of models, etc.) although at another level as this paper will make clear. However, it would be needed to design a modelling kit that is of low costs and adapted to the availability of local materials and suitable for the climatic condition of Vietnam. Two fields of application are projected as most applicable in Vietnam: modelling in architectural education and research investigation. Application for user's participation in the design process will depend on the development of building policy in the country.

summary This study is a part of a licentiate thesis on "Functional kitchen for the Vietnamese cooking way"at the Department of Architecture and Development studies, Lund University. The issues it is dealing with are: (1) Inadequacy of kitchen design in the apartment buildings in Hanoi, where the kitchen is often designed as a mere cooking place - other parts of the food making process are not given any attention. (2) Lack of standard dimensional and planning criteria for functional kitchen which can serve as bases for kitchen design. // The thesis aims at finding out indicators on functional spatial requirements for kitchen, which can serve as guide-line for designing functional kitchen for Hanoi. One of the main propositions in the thesis is that functional kitchens for Hanoi should be organised to permit the culinary activities done according to the Vietnamese urban culinary practice. This is based on the concept that the culinary activity is an expression Of culture, thus the practice of preparing meal in the present context of the urban households in Hanoi has an established pattern, method which demand a suitable area and arrangement in the kitchen. This pattern and cooking method should make up the functional requirement for kitchen in Hanoi, and be taken in to account if functional kitchen designing is to be achieved. In the context of the space-limited apartment building of Hanoi, special focus is given to find out indicators on the minimum functional spatial requirements of the kitchen works.

summary This paper presents and discusses the research, design and construction of the urban furniture "Trançado", permanently located at Largo da Batata, a public space in S?o Paulo, Brazil. The project was accomplished using computational design processes as parametric modeling and digital fabrication of prototypes. Stakeholders from different areas were involved: professionals, organizations and citizens. The article contributes discussing and describing the technical features. Above all, it produces inputs for reflection and progress of the application of computational design in architecture.

summary Current initiatives for urbanising space are focused on three key locations; Orbital settlements; Lunar settlements and Martian settlements. Of the three, Martian settlements present themselves as the most hospitable location for interplanetary colonisation due to the various similarities between Earth and Mars. Despite significant scientific research for the settlement of Mars, there lacks an equally significant Urban analysis and impact of such settlements. The presented study explores the habitation of Mars through an urban lens of efficiency that responds to geographic and climatic conditions, as well as addressing behavioural challenges of a human settlement on Mars. The study is presented through two key stages, the first establishes life support modules, while the second develops an urban solution for habitation. In both stages, a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm is implemented, with a focus on the selection mechanisms that choose the optimal solution from the population generated by the algorithm. The results showcase an adaptable model that allows for multiple stakeholders with varying expertise the ability to influence the design of a Martian settlement.

summary Media façades grant infinitely many faces to a building and can change the architectural meaning of what a façade is. They can also help to transform the face of the building into an over-size communication device for public (Borras, 2010). Contemporary media façades mostly rely on the content of their screens, and only a small number of them physicality of the screen itself. Precedent building façades that incorporate moving componentsareunable to function as displays. In this paper we present a media façade design, titled“Tran[s]quillity”, in which we fuse reconfigurable building com-ponents with display technologies to achieve a unique design. As well as fulfilling the function of a regular media wall -as a crisp screen- we imagine Tran[s]quillity as a transformable kinetic sculpture that can act as a screen of physical depth to introduce greater functionality and interactivity.

summary As the climate continues to change, the number of communities under threat continues to increase. While large cities are typically considered valuable, due to either economic or other larger interests and, thus, deemed worth protecting, smaller communities are often left to fend for themselves with little to no external support. The impacts and efficacy of centralized and higher-level decision making have their limitations, interests, and stake- holders, suggesting that a decentralized approach can augment the capacity for local negotiations and decisions to be made that respond both practically, and more intimately, to the needs of those facing imminent threat. The emergence of video game platforms has broadened the possibility for participatory design systems to take place, allowing for a multitude of decisions to be made via a tran- scalar approach towards issues unresolvable through conventional architectural means, while enabling difference and disagreement to exist. The goal of this paper is to demon- strate, through several research projects, different ways that platforms and gamification can engage with the specifics of different threatened communities, ultimately enabling autonomy.

summary This paper describes the methods and results of an experimental workshop held at the Department of Architecture of PUC-Rio devoted to exploring design alternatives and digital fabrication techniques to produce concrete façade elements for the Consulate General of Portugal building in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The workshop aimed the adoption of advanced computer-aided design and production methods within a rare and innovative university-industry collaboration context in Latin America. The paper aims to discuss contemporary concrete casting methods and its applicability, as well as the achievements and pitfalls of the adopted technique. The results are discussed under the light of Antoine Picon's notion of contemporary ornament and Branko Kolarevic's perspectives on digital imprecision.

summary Considering users' subjective impressions is a challenging question in architectural design. Answering this question is a human-centred approach which is critical for designing spaces that afford true well-being for their users relating to Sustainable Development Goal 3, or SDG 3:"Good Health and Well-being"). While various methods for evaluating users' subjective impressions exist, their focus is mainly on classifying spaces into pre-determined categories representing the users' impressions. Such classification fails to capture the richness of users' actual interpretation, as reflected in descriptions provided by users when they express freely their impression about architectural space. Aiming to capture this richness, we extend the current state-of-the-art methods and propose an integrated approach to extract and analyse the users' interpretations while interviewing them observing a Tokyo streetscape. In addition, by comparing their comments and gaze, we expose correlations between abstract descriptions and the architectural space, which are difficult to obtain using existing methods. Our insights are a stepping-stone for enhancing computer-aided architecture by integrating visual impressions into the design processes.

summary Active bending projects today employ highly specialized, complex computer software and machines for design, simulation, and materialization. At times, these projects lack a sensitivity to cultures limited in high-tech infrastructures but rich in low-tech knowledges. Situated Computations is an approach to computational design that grounds it in the social world by acknowledging historical, cultural, and material contexts of design and making, as well as the social and political structures that drive them. In this article, we ask, how can a Situated Computations approach to contemporary active bending broaden the design space and uplift low-tech cultural practices? To answer this question, we design and build "The Infinite Line"- an active bending pavilion that draws on the history, material practices, and knowledges in design in the Trinidad Carnival - for the 2019 International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS) exhibition in Barcelona, Spain. We conclude that Situated Computations provide an opportunity to integrate local knowledges, histories, design practices, and material behaviors as drivers in active bending approaches, so that structure, material practices, and cultural settings are considered concurrently.

summary Recently, the mainstream gradually has become replacing neighborhood-style communities with high-density residences. The original pleasant scale and enclosed residential spaces have been broken, and the traditional neighborhood relations are going away. This research uses machine learning to train the model to generate a new plan, which is used in today’s residential design. First, in order to obtain a better generation effect, this study extracts the transcendental information of the neighborhood community in north of China, using roads, buildings etc. as morphological representations; GauGAN, compared to the pix2pix and pix2pixHD, used by predecessors, can achieve a clearer and a more diversified output and also fit irregular contours more realistically. ANN model trained by 167 general layout samples of a neighborhood community in north of China from 1950s to 1970s can generate various general layouts in different shapes and scales. The experiment proves that GauGAN is more suitable for general layout generation than pix2pix (pix2pixHD); Distributed training can improve the clarity of the generation and allow later vectorization to be more convenient.
