title Enseñanza de la representación manual y digital, para arquitectos y diseñadores [Teaching Hand and Digital Representation to Architects and Designers]
source SIGraDi 2004 - [Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Porte Alegre - Brasil 10-12 november 2004
summary The supremacy of the digital means of representation and communication and the resulting shift of the manual means in the field of design and architecture, have engendered multiple opinions and literature. They focus and analyze the virtues and risks, the losses and substitutions, and the different expressive, productive and conceptual results of their leading role in the creative process. Furthermore, if we consider both as two extremes, apparently opposed, a broad panorama of combinations and additions are produced by the emerging group of hybrid practices. This motivated the development of a research project in the Universidad Nacional del Litoral de Santa Fe, Argentina, under the Program CAI+D 2000 dealing with Design and the Analog – Digital Means. From this project emerged a collection of conceptual speculations and experimentations in the extended field of representation, extended by the incorporation of new means and hybridations, searching for new parameters and methods for professional training and practice. Key words: analog, digital, graphics, means, representation.

title Modelos digitales de representación de lo real como estrategia de management alternativo en la práctica profesional arquitectónica [Digital models of representation of reality as an alternative management strategy in architectural practice]
source SIGraDi 2010_Proceedings of the 14th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, pp. Bogotá, Colombia, November 17-19, 2010, pp. 320-323
summary An architectural project is designed in weeks or months—sometimes in places far from the construction site—and is built in years. The challenge of design is more than creating a three - dimensional digital (3D) model that includes all available information; visualization and communication throughout the entire process is crucial due to the global nature of contemporary architectural practice. This study asks: What tool would satisfy this need for communication? The objective of this paper is to explore these issues and propose an answer to this query based on flexible management to solve them.

title Imagen del espacio público e imagen digital (Image of the public space and digital image)
source SIGraDi 2003 - [Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Rosario Argentina 5-7 november 2003
summary This paper refers to the concept, image and meaning of the public space in media size cities. The premise is the displacement of the social comprehension and valuation of the public due to economical, political and cultural features of contemporary. The concept of public understood as an adjective of urban space moves to the public as a substantive that refers to a general condition of life in city. Digital image and its informational manipulation are the main resources for processing the public. The research depends on images both from its methodological or epistemological point of view.

title Infographic: Its Incorporation and Relativity in Architectural Design Process
source III Congreso Iberoamericano de Grafico Digital [SIGRADI Conference Proceedings] Montevideo (Uruguay) September 29th - October 1st 1999, pp. 313-318
summary This paper is about an architectural design workshop regularly held at a public university in Santa Fe, Argentina. The class is about 150 students large, with different informatic capabilities and hardware facilities. The design problem of the workshop, which is one year long, is the relationship between architectural project and the construction of the urbanity. This implies both a physical intervention and a cultural expression. Pedagogy seeks students to overcome individualism, characteristic that is hardly induced by PCs, making a socialized design experience. A complementary and simultaneous use of graphic and infographic data is one of the main criteria of the workshop. The idea is to look for students to reach a wide vision by means of the use of different representation systems and means of information. Digital graphic is introduced early in the design process as an electronic model of urban context. It is considered as a one among many other graphic resources and is used together with ordinary models, geometric drawings, aerial and regular photography and hand made sketches. This paper relates the results that have been obtained when students were asked to make an analytic and sensitive approach to the relationship site - urban situation. This relationship has a great importance for the workshop since its goal is to make students to understand the the value of designing in and for the city.

source SIGraDi 2003 - [Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Rosario Argentina 5-7 november 2003
summary The concern about public space, digital graphic and a non-habitual theoretical background are the elements of an on-process research this paper relates to. The premise of the research is the current uncertain experience of both socio-cultural and physical-spatial public space in an Argentinean intermediate city. The focus is a workshop carried out to explore how forms for the public space may be designed when urban conditions are unstable, such the case of vacant areas, lost places or terrain-vague. Digital liquid shapes and post-structural concepts are alternative resources applied to this exploration that assumes the cultural and material complexity of our urban life.

title Multimedia y diseño arquitectónico diferente (Multimedia and different architectural design)
source SIGraDi 2003 - [Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Rosario Argentina 5-7 november 2003
summary Hearing and touch may be incorporated into visual representation systems that historically covered creative process, now helped by multimedia. During 2002-2003 we developed an experimental design studio that challenged participants to design architecture from words (using their spelling, pronunciation, location, etc.) and through an inquiry based on the "concept of inwardness". Evoking a word from the association of images and texts as well as seizing its potential tactile and hearing dimensions completed what was a very interactive design process. Such process was utilized to generate images and ideas geared to design/make an "installation" to be displayed at art events.

summary This paper presents the searching of new building modes for the knowledge of design in curriculum workshops at Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseno y Urbanismo of the Universidad Nacional del Litoral the proposed “research action” program articulates longitudinally in the three cycles of the career, understanding architecture as metaknowledge within a new paradigm of subjectivity, complexity and multidimensionality. In other words, it is recognized a new scenery tending to modify didactic relations. This experimental field looks for conscientious equilibrium between “written culture/audiovisual culture”, and “analog instruments/digital media”. We focus our interest on the “machine interacting with and for men”, looking for harmonious synthesis through a new way of thinking, to allow “real progress”. For turning this idea into action, we organized an alternative and plural team-work in architecture. We called it “experimental workshop”. In this first level the students worked. On a preliminary plan of a “kindergarden”. They developed a divergent process through the 3D simulations (using the software 3DS MAX v2), scale models and sensible sketches. For conclusions, the paper addresses the characteristics of the pedagogic model used and the results achieved.

summary Building of knowledge and the traditional methods to approach it are changed by new technologies. The coexistence of two cultures, one of them based on written text and the other multitextual, are presented as an interesting exploring field. Accordingly, improvement in building of design learning, “new logics of perception” and “new projectable logics, are the main challenges to be addressed in a Research - Action Programme in harmonious interaction between both cultures and their instruments (analogous and digitals). Recognizing the existence of fields teachers are not trained in, an interaction teacher - pupil in didactic strategies is considered to be necessary.

source SIGraDi 2006 - [Proceedings of the 10th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Santiago de Chile - Chile 21-23 November 2006, pp. 420-424
summary The digital technology and the integration of knowledge between musicians and architects it’s presented as a unique platform to explore and give a new meaning to the bonds between Music and Architecture. The presentation describes the experience and the results of creative process that link a group of music and architecture students and teachers for a hypermedia composition. The processes are orientated to the simultaneous construction of products from two approaches: from music to the form (plastic or visual), and vice versa. The exploration begins from musical assignments and it’s limited to two types of situations and creative bonds with digital technology: • Independent actions of the subject-musician and subject-architect. • Conjoint actions of both subjects. // The conclusions allow to evaluate the degree of measurability of the process taken care and possible derivations of the particular interpretations of them in each situation.

source SIGraDi 2005 - [Proceedings of the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Lima - Peru 21-24 november 2005, vol. 1, pp. 438-443
summary Throughout history, architecture has transposed contributions bound to structuralist focus or to musical composition. This is from linguistic and music respectively. New visualization systems show the possibility to give transpositions a new meaning, form the potentialities of hypermedia; locking for new projects parameters. This papers will show experimental workshop results developed within CI+D 2000 “New speeches and design process”. They study links and explore our work interrelating word – music and image. These processes are developed by people coming from literature, visual arts, music, and architecture areas. Lastly, the first results will be shown. Since parameters were transposed from music, by using NURBS forms, space prefiguration is tried out. [Full paper in Spanish]

summary University faculty -adult culture- work from the logic that goes through their speech, didactic model and strategies, providing special links with: the aim of knowledge, transmission mechanisms and technological medium. Students -young culture- receive and deal with knowledge mechanisms from a new logic. In a multimedia framework they establish interpretations using technological medium from semantic decodification. Young graduates, assistants, studio leaders -intermediate culture- coming from traditional learning models with acquired abilities in digital media, are a “potential interface” between both cultures. The impact between fields and cultures implies limitations and risks that may encourage change. A discourse about “new didactic configurations” from the point of view of these three cultures makes possible the exploration of other ways of teaching. Therefore the articulation of teacher-student interrelations and media promotes the development of teaching-learning techniques. [Full paper in Spanish]

title GEOMETRY AND ARCHITECTURE: NURBS, DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION
source Proceedings of the Fourth International Conference of Mathematics & Design, Special Edition of the Journal of Mathematics & Design, Volume 4, No.1, pp. 135-139.
summary Geometry regarded as a tool for understanding is perhaps the part of Mathematics which is the most intuitive, concrete and linked to reality. From its roots as a tool to describe and measure shapes, geometry as ‘the space science’ , has grown towards a theory of ideas and methods by means of which it is possible to build and study idealised models, not only from the physical world but also from the real world. In graphic architecture thought, geometry usually appears as an instrumental support for project speculation. Geometric procedures are presented as representational resources for the graphic testing of reflection and for the exposition of ideas in order to build a logical order as regards representation and formal prefiguration. The fast rise of computing in the last decades has made it possible for architects to work massively and in a graphic and intuitive way with mathematical representations of tridimensional geometry, such as the NURBS . These organic surfaces of free shapes defined by vectorial curves have allowed access to a rapid generation of complex shapes with a minumum amount of data and of specific knowledge.

The great development of modelling achieved by the digital media and the limitations in the technical and building areas and in the existence of materials which are coherent with the resultant shapes reveal a considerable distance between the systems of ideation and simulation characteristic of the computing era and the analogous systems of production inherited from the slow industrial development. This distance has been shortened by CAD/CAM systems, which are, however, not very accessible to the architectural field. If we incorporate to the development of these divergent media the limitations which are distinctive of the material resources and procedures of the existent local technology, the aforementioned distance seems even greater.

Assuming the metaphor of living at the threshold of two ages (industrial-computing, analogical-digital, material-virtual) and the challenge of the new conceptual and operational tools in our field, we work in the mixture, with no exclusions or substitutions, proposing (by means of the development of informational complements) some alternatives of work to approach the issue under discussion from the Architecture Workshop.

source SIGraDi 2005 - [Proceedings of the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Lima - Peru 21-24 november 2005, vol. 2, pp. 778-782
summary The search by new architectural forms with digital media loses interest when its results become foreseeable and repetitive in the growth of the large cities. At present, the interest is greater by the processing and manipulation of digital databases as alternatives of the architectural project. The resultant architectures possess forms that contrast less but with greater diversity in their spatial relations. DATABASE 3D is presented like a formal proposal risked of investigation. The experiences of project explore the concepts of Collective Autor, digital database and Hipertexto. It accepts the construction of a diverse and complex reality conformed by fragmentary spatial systems from the adoption of the mosaic, collage, remix and the digital sampling. [Full paper in Spanish]

summary Contemporary architecture replaces the concept facade by skin: outer layer mediating between the building and its surroundings; active, informed, connected and communicative membrane. Our training and practice in architecture, still working for the rigor and stability of modular geomerías on determinants of a unique spatial and morphological situation passive. In the teaching of architecture in Latin America there are no exercises that incorporate a learning design to create flexible dynamic geometries as possible structures for sensitive skin. The research aims to explore the possibilities and systematize the dynamic folding of planar surfaces using geometric simulation programs (freeform origami, Grasshopper); building scale prototypes (rapid prototyping and arduino microcontroller) and subsequent verification of energy analysis program.

source SIGraDi 2011 [Proceedings of the 15th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Argentina - Santa Fe 16-18 November 2011, pp. 210-214
summary The international architecture of the past decade adds parametric design to the project as a new variable dynamic strategy in the design process. Generative patterns meet a way of achieving parameterization from the computational geometry. The experimental developments of URDIR.Lab (FADU-UNL) group, ranges from: the current projective exercises with dynamic materials and forms to the development of simple formulas applied to everyday practice. The proposed challenge is to merge the local available technological resources - pre-industrial and industrial - with the ideation systems of post-industrial technologies.
