summary |
An effective tutor must deal with a fundamental problem of communication: to determine how messages are received and understood and to formulate appropriate answers. This means that a tutor, more than a speaker, must verify that both parties know what information has been covered, what is missing, and which communication might be erroneous. In this article the authors discuss how an understanding of a student can be constructed in an artificial intelligence program and how this understanding, coupled with a facility for language generation, can be used to build flexible machine tutor |
