summary	A method for the design of surface structures with generator lines and free edges is developed. A brief exposition of theÔ h)000*°° ÔŒ theory of characteristic curves in surface structures is given and applied to the analysis of surface structures with the aim of classifying the surface structures to those that can have free edges and those that cannot. An example of an hyperbolic paraboloid with free edges is presented
