summary |
The Arroyo Bridge, spanning 80-feet across a ravine near Los Angeles, is anchored by four, 35-foot deep concrete pilings, hand-bored into the hillside to provide adequate support in the alluvial soil. An asymmetrical superstructure of over 600 discrete parts, the bridge is joined by unique part-to-part connections that frame the pedestrian walkway. From a distance, the biomorphic shape integrates into a steep landscape of eucalyptus, coming into view only upon approach. The tubular silhouette draws inspiration from the vascular architecture of leaves and layered branching system of trees in the neighboring forest. |
