summary |
Reinventing Texture is an experiment to capture and reimagine the textures of the city of Tokyo by collecting and collaging elements found in the city. Objects found on the streets of Tokyo were collected using photogrammetry, then the scanned models of the objects were digitally collaged and finally fabricated into a self-supporting dome structure made of Japanese paper by combining digital fabrication and traditional papier-mâché technique. The quality and resolution inherent in each object is transformed through the process of scanning, fabrication, and handcrafting, thereby giving the resulting structure a familiar yet strange aesthetic. The project is also an exploration of the use of Japanese paper as a structural material in architecture, challenging the conventional paradigm of architectural materials and offering insights into sustainable and innovative design strategies. |
