summary |
As the smart home moves ever closer to visions of digitally integrated spaces, there is a growing risk that it could become as intrusive as it is personable. In this project, we explore ways to increase comfort of use by applying Human-Building Interaction techniques to the dual goals of amplifying the emotional sensitivity of the smart home and assuaging fears of privacy-invasive data collection in smart devices. To that end, we designed the Smart Hub: Emotionally Responsive, Private, and Adorable (SHERPA) as an alternative to smart speakers and assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Nest, applying HBI principles to reframe privacy control and design empathetic interactions with the smart home. |
