summary |
This paper explores the barriers to learning digital design tools within architectural design education. Teaching methods currently adopted across high education are typically detached from the studio context and overarching curriculum and taught via passive delivery of step-by-step instructions. This contributes to high cognitive load and low motivation, causing significant learning difficulties for students. This project aims to explore and test better ways to teach design software and computation, to improve current teaching practices. The investigation involved a rigorous systematic literature review and a series of co-design workshops that included both students and educators. The study bridges the gap in understanding barriers and opportunities in teaching and learning design software in architecture and design. This paper details the proposed multi-level responsibility framework and software tutorial model, synthesising findings derived from literature and empirical data from workshops. The manuscript provides valuable insight into learning barriers in digital design education and reports teaching strategies that can be adapted to various teaching contexts. |
