summary |
This paper explores the application of 'Depth of Field' (DoF) to enhance immersion and narrative clarity in architectural and urban visualizations. Depth of field (DoF) is a photographic technique that controls the depth of focus within an image. It determines which part of the scene is in focus and looks sharp, while the rest is out of focus and looks blurred. This paper focuses on digital hand-drawn background illustrations in visual novel games (VN games). VN games are built up by text stories and images, are based on characters talking in front of different backgrounds, and the backgrounds are always architectural and urban visualizations. The images nowadays in VN games are mostly flat restricting the ability to guide viewer attention effectively and failing to create a nuanced spatial experience. This paper will discuss how DoF can be applied to enhance its impact and explore the potential of DoF in evoking emotional responses, directing viewer attention, and influencing storytelling within architectural and urban environments. |
