summary The college students' Bamboo Construction Competition provides a forum for college students to engage in authentic construction and to gain a comprehensive understanding of the design process. The digital design tools afford the opportunity to realise the non-linear spatial form of the original bamboo construction works. However, as a non-standardised material, the nodes of original bamboo are not straightforward to handle, and the margin of error for manual operation is considerable, which makes the non-linear spatial form more challenging to construct. The study puts forth a solution strategy from the vantage point of digital design, encompassing the four digital application phases of form generation and optimisation, component node refinement and positioning, process adjustment, and on-site construction. The results achieve the design goals and outcomes of implementation-oriented form generation and optimisation, accurate control and output of the digital model, synergy in the design-build process, and reduction of errors in the design-build process. It is the intention of this study to achieve effective control of the actual construction results through digital tools and to provide methodological references for the combination of digital design and appropriate construction techniques for original bamboo buildings.
