The present contribution addresses the topic of how to design novel structures in timber with the aid of a computational tool based on vector-based graphic statics (VGS) in a research-by-design approach. The context, scope and theoretical framework allowing to design strut-and-tie models in timber is explained. An application (design task given to Eng. Arch. Students) is presented. The results concern the primary structure and joints, and are discussed regarding the initial objectives.
