summary |
Within the context of burgeoning urban populations and the rolling back of state resources, there is growing interest in ways in which citizens may participate in the creation of resilient and livable cities. This paper proposes the concept of ‘urban prototyping,’ and employs a design research methodology to develop and document the socially-sponsored design and digital fabrication of an urban shelter. We explore how we might use networked design and fabrication technologies to leverage the social capital locked within non-professional communities so that our current cities might evolve into whatever our next cities need to be. |
