Cognitive Role of Ill-Structured Representations in Preliminary Design

summary
I have previously argued that cognitive processes involved in preliminary design require "lateral" transformations or mental state shifts, and that "ill-structured" mental representations are necessary to support these transformations. I review the argument and provide additional support for it by appealing to some neuropsychological data.
