This paper claims that now the time is right to investigate a transdisciplinary understanding of design. Nowadays, design is excellent in many disciplines and specialized fields but not connected and coordinated to other fields. The benefit of a transdiciplinary understanding of design will open up new ways in teaching, research and business. The current activities in this field at leading schools worldwide evidence that the time has come to gain a fundamental understanding of design. In this paper we describe the phenomena that design as a research topic currently gains in importance. We then discuss why there is no unified definition of design. We explain our approach towards a transdiciplinary understanding of design and show how this differs from other initiatives. |
