summary	The concept of scale can have different interpretations. In this paper the idea of scale as a regulator of abstraction levels is discussed in connection with the concept of representation. It is suggested that the appropriate design scaling can play a role quite more far reaching than when it is used just to adjust the size of drawings to fit the limits of a graphic support.
