Contemporary global consumption patterns rely heavily on resource intensive processes, resulting in a substantial carbon footprint across transportation, production and consumption stages. Amongst those patterns, food waste and its link to the context of the research led to the selection of the main aggregate for this process, eggshell, Mexico is one of the main egg producers, consumers and as a result waste producers globally, making sense of its local sourcing and management. An experimental process passing through material and sourcing evaluation, fabrication method selection, geometrical development and structural testing, has led to the current state of this eggshell based composite. The material process described here is still in initial stages and under development towards non-bearing interior structures, however the knowledge gathered can be considered an advancement for the application of bio-composites, promotion of a circular economy and a potential option to promote a sustainable future through multiple industries. |
